I've got a cracking OD army Bivvi, however it ain't broke yet so naturally it needs fixing!

i'm after modding my bivvi to make it "hooped" because i really hate having the fabric lie on my face when i'm happily cocooned away in the land of nod. so i need to get some extra fabric so i can create the fabric tunnel i'll stick my bendy carbon fibre pole through, i'm guessing there may be a retailer online of some kind or if you know of somewhere that has some beyond repair bivvi's or someone you can suggest?

i also plan to close the lid with either a zip (hard way) or with velcro (easy way) and leave an overhang to allow it to cover the fastner so it doesn't leak through it to much, this way i can get rid of the unweildy and possibly strangulation inducing pull cord!

What thread should i be looking at using here and should i be taping the stitches also? any advice is much appreciated chaps as this is my first time working with gore-tex.
thanks
pete

I've done this a few years ago now and it worked okay. I bought the zip, some goretex type material, tape seam sealer and some midge netting from a company that I believe is now called Penine Outdoor. I got a tailor to sew it up and attach the zip, they didn't make a great job of it but that may have been my explanation. It is doable but I'd recommend a friend or some experience with a sewing machine. I haven't used the bag in a while preferring the comfort of a tent nowadays, I'll try to get some photo's this weekend.

You won't need much fabric for the hoop pole if you don't make it continious. It doesn't need to be goretex either.

Taping is needed, duct tape will work if you haven't the real stuff.
I've used it on holed bivis and it works.

Thanks guys! Scoman, love to see some pics m8.
Shewie - pm headed your way!
barn owl - i've got Rolls and rolls of duck tape but yeah taping the seams sounds a good idea, i think my local habidasher or poss my outdoor store has the stuff i need.
crackin! i can finally sleep cocooned in my bivvi without it smothering me! heh.

I use sealgrip on seams - once you have stitched any old nylon loops on the outside, rub the seamgrip over the inside of the stitches to form a rubber barrier.

Hi i'm thinking the same as you , got a b/bag on its way to me for a trade with some leather.
I was out shopping with the wife and in a shop they got a roll of DPM Gore-tex Fabric at £7.00p a meter by 140 ish.
If you want some no probs, pm me
Cheers Topknot.
