Just had my 42nd the other day and i' ve seriously begun to realise that the things i was once able to do with no effect are over.

Not really been on here for that long and didnt really understand that id really been bushcrafting since mid teens. Though i mostly spent days watching wildlife, sleeping next to the fire and drinking a bottle of whiskey as a sleeping bag. Now the hangovers kill me and the fires not as hot as it once was. Even the dog whos now 16 is struggling.

I suppose the easy times lasted a while and now experience will have to overshadow my youthfulness.

Now im going to have to buy a few choice pieces of gear to make up the comfort.

When and how did you guys realise your no longer 20?

However i could still outhike any 20 yr ol

I might weigh 20 kilos more than I used to, and I might be going a bit grey, but I'm still feel like I'm 25 (most of the time at least!).

Inside, I'm 25. Outside, however, is another matter! I find if it does hurt in the morning, I've forgotten to add a libation of oramorph to my morning coffee!

Age and treachery will overcome youth and enthusiasm anytime :D

Besides, you learn to be kind to yourself. Why carry the biggest, heaviest, longest ? Pick the few choice bits and enjoy :)
and for aching bones and joints that tell you every morning just how much work they've done over the years, the exped down mat is a godsend :D

Tell you what else I learned, plants aren't only good to eat, many of them make good medicines too :D and meadowsweet and willowfine are worth finding out about

What do I miss ?
The ease of movement, the confidence that I can jump that no bother when I come to a burn, running down hill full tilt knowing I'm not going to stumble :) working all day from dawn to dusk, the cast iron stomach and waking up *every* morning feeling fully charged.

Age is a case of mind over matter; if you don't mind, it don't matter :)

cheers,
Toddy

Hang on...I can hear something.....

Is that your mum?

Something about tea time?

:D

What Toddy said.

As a mate said to me once "Now it takes all night to do what I used to do all night"

;)

Many moons ago, when I was a young whippersnapper, I spent far too much time running around with a 55lb Bergen, 24lb belt kit and a light machine gun hung around me. Now, at 56, I can't run with that sort of weight anymore, but I can still carry about 30kg, though at a somewhat slower pace. I'm quite happy to let the youngsters rush ahead while I plod quietly along admiring the scenery. That way, when I arrive at the destination, somebody has already put a brew on, and there's a cup of coffee waiting for "The Old Man".

I think it's difficult to look back and not put on the rose coloured glasses, so very often our opinion of our youth is very heavily biased and cloudy.

For me, i'm 43 and am very happy to be 43.

Sure i did some things quicker when i was 20, but i do many things better now i'm 43, so it kinda balances out.
