over here in central america we get a REALLY tiny variety pestering humans (and me), fortunately they're only annoying but don't spread diseases; on cane toads (bufo marinus) you get a big fat variety and not too long ago i removed one from the back shell of a small turtle...

sorry if that's too much detail but these creatures fascinate me
Likewise, they are endlessly fascinating.

Definitely Trochosa but which species I can't tell (there are 4). The largest ones (up to 20mm) are T. robusta, but the sizes overlap so these are spiders that require microscopic examination to tell them apart :(
Yes, your right. I labelled the one I found as Trochosa ruricola, but only because they are supposedly that much more common than T. robusta.

My one was some sort of bird of prey, guessing a kestrel as it was hovering but I don't know so I didn't guess! I am not that good at birds

Stepped outside the backdoor to empty the cat's overnight offering, as you do, and there was a movement to my left. Decent sized brown bird lands on the grass not three feet in front of me, stalks across to the border, and hopes up on the lowest branch of a rhododendron. Back to me, utterly unconcerned. I peer at it (no glasses on - I mean who wants to see detail when emptying the litter tray...?) and it turns its head. Bless me if it isn't a tawny owl. Never seen an owl in the wild before, never mind right here in the back garden. So I'm rather chuffed.

Of course I couldn't stop myself saying hello to it, which got me a withering look of contempt and a move further away into the bushes, and thus our encounter was at an end.

Didn't get photographic proof, unfortunately. Hands were a bit occupied with, well, you know...

Couldn't see, as it was on the other side of my little valley in the woods, but heard a couple of stags bolving madly this afternoon. The sound realy does echo around here.
Been stood outside for a few mins this evening, I can see pipistrelle flying around the streetlamps, and hear owls and those stags still bellowing like mad .....
My neighbours black cat slunk by aswell.
It's Halloween, so maybe I'd better stay inside and lock the door. It's a bit spooky!
Couldn't make it up.
