What was the smell of school dinners ?

My internal delight of school dinners was when we had puddings that were served with custard. They used to make it jugs before the meal that then sat developing a gorgeous thick skin which was scooped off a put in a bowl to one side.

Much to the dinner ladies consternation I always asked for the skin bowl which I got :D sheer bliss :p

Sometimes we would get custard pie. Not egg custard but a huge tray bake pastry base, a layer of jam and a thick set layer of double strength custard with skin on every slice.

I loved it when they did the big tray bakes :)
Everything from mince in pastry to apple sponge. They often did rice pudding in the ovens too. Cleared space on the cooker rings for all those veggies boiling :rolleyes2:
Tapioca is awesome.

(Never mind it resembles frogspawn)
I think of sago as being like frogspawn and tapioca as sort of wee jelly beads.

I still love custard skin - but rarely see it now that I have basically given up deserts .... :(
Since I stopped going to the pub two or three nights a week, I've spent a great many evenings cooking weird, wonderful and occasionally exotic meals. The one thing I have a real problem with is desserts, I'm not really fond of them. I do however love custard. I've made custards from every continent!
