I'm trying to book some campsites in France at the minute, the prices aren't cheap to start with but then they stick this Tourist Tax on top aswell.

What's that all about then ?

Two nights on a decent site I've found should cost 53 euros, then they add the tax and it jumps up to over 80 !

Is this a deterent to keep us out or what

I could handle 1.07 euros a day but whacking another 30 on seems a bit harsh.

I'll keep looking but they all seem to be trying it on.

Shewie keep your money in Britian there is some loverly campsites in and around South Wales. The coast is stunning and when the weather is this good no need to go abroad

Out of my hands I'm afraid Will, what she says goes when it comes to summer holidays. I suppose it's a trade off for me getting passes out to play in the woods every month.

If I had my way we'd be getting a lavvu and touring the north west coast of Scotland for a couple of weeks.

Carol wants sun, sea, wine and watersports. Whereas I'd be happy with a quiet loch, two trees and a nice little fire.

Fair one mate. I managed to pursuade her indoors to come camping for the first time at 40 :yikes: after showing her the fully decked out bell tents:lmao:, but in fairness it was a choice of camping or no holiday for us this year. Hope you have a good one, ever looked at Lake Garda thats where we fancied we cash was a bit more ready?

Portugal - sun, sea, wine and more watersports than you can shake a kelp frond at. The surfing and windsurfing in Portugal beat France hands down - Atlantic surf but with Med climate, rather than Normandy/Brittany with rain.

Nice local wines, no tourist tax and friendly locals.

You're right Ed but my dad's got a house in the Algarve and we've done it to death over the last few years. Probably have a week there in October though.

lucky you - must get over there in the autumn / winter to do some surfing.

Have you surfed there much before Ed ?

I've been getting into it for the last few years over there, Praia do Amado and Carrapeteira is probably my fave spot although it gets packed when we're usually there. It's only about 40 mins away from my folks house and Carol gets to fry in the sun all day while I play about in the sea.

We'll have to sort out a surf meet one day

We got stung with Tax on a campsite in Switzerland a couple of weeks ago.
2 people, small backpacking tent for 8 nights =£130quid. We were gobsmacked.

We had gone out to meet up with the inlaws in their caravan, otherwise we would have camped up in the mountains as usual.

What is Portugal like for a long weekend bushcraft from Leeds-Bradford airport?

I was thinknig the very same.

I'll try and find out about bushcraft in Portugal but I've got a feeling most of the greener bits are national parks and camping in illegal unless it's in specified camping sites.
I'll be ringing my dad next week so I'll get him to make some enquiries whilst he's there.

There is Tourist Tax here in Germany, though mainly confined to Spa resorts and islands.
The idea is that it covers the extra cost of keeping the area in good condition, enviroment clean etc.Wether it is actually used for that purpose is open to debate.A bit like the so called "enviromental tax" on petrol here.

As for the high cost of Swiss campsites,i manged to find a way around that ,though i was using a differnt campsite each night, trekking from A to B,moving light on my own with small tent.Wait untill the campsite is "closed",no one on the gate. Evening move in,set up camp, use showers, facilitys move on early before the site is controled. No moralising please-i know im going to hell in a hand cart for that.Just an idea for those on a budget.

Hi 303Brit

Even as a Yorkshireman I've always had trouble with this method. :)

I prefer to try and pass through any village late in the day and buy supplies, then continue on and camp in the mountains where it is quiet anyway. Mountain streams are 'bracing' for a strip wash and the views are better.
