WHAT DID YOU MAKE TODAY?

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I made some candles using my new molds. I came up with an ingenious way of setting the wicks up as well which I will post in the TOP Tips thread.

They make a good sized candle, how well do they release the set candle?

If you are making quite a few candles I would use a long piece of wick and once the candle is set then trim close to the base - that way you don't waste too much wick.

Amazingly well. the base detaches from the tube and leaves the thin end exposed for an inch. It is a simple matter of just pushing it out. I was surprised at how easy it was. I bought 6 and am gona get more as I just ordered 10kg of bees wax. I will make and sell some and get my money back. Also I melt my wax in an old tea pot and when making these there is not any mess whatsoever. I use a tiny dab of plumbers putty to seal the bottom when pouring. DD x

Ps I run the wick through all the molds and corks in one go and then pull them tight one at a time thus saving loads on waste wick. I have made other candles so I have got the hang of it much more now than when I started, x

Another bee hotel* to add to the other three which are being filled up by our leaf cutter bees.

* Also known as a log with multiple deep holes drilled in it.

A pea wigwam, for my peas, and a fish finger sandwich for lunch.
I found some gluten free fish fingers, in morrisons yesterday.
OMG! Must have been 10 years since I had a fish finger sarnie. I'm a happy bunny.
Small pleasures.
Just waiting on some sand to make my terracotta pot cooler. Ideal for cool canned drinks in the garden, or a power cut milk keeper.

Please post details of how to make a terracota pot cooler and did you have tomato sauce with the fish fingers? we did when we were kids. x

Sadly there is no tomato sauce in town. I forgot to buy any when I went to morrisons after my x Ray. My lift was waiting so had to rush round without a list and just grab what I could from the g/f aisle.
Still tasted excellent.

I'll post about my cooler when I've made it. You need two big unglazed terracotta pots, one that fits inside the other with a 1/2 " or so gap. Fill gap with sand, wet the sand, put damp muslin/ tea towel over top. milk etc goes into the smaller pot. I'll do a better explanation later.
Works on evaporation principles.
I think my pots are a bit small. My big pot needs to be my small pot, but they are expensive. So for now, it's a small cooler to experiment with the idea, and see how well it performs.

Im busy making my Nesting box organised, tidy even.

(and maybe later a few home made ready meals)

Co-Op has many empty selves but didnt affect me; was buying ingredients instead of food.

You can make them out of flower pots. You just need a bung for the hole in the bigger one. Still not cheap!
That's what I'm using, but they must be unglazed terracotta.
The only frost proof ones I've found, put the cost at £90, and then you need the sand on top.
The ones I'm using atm as an experiment are from The Range, are not realy big enough, but total cost minus sand is under a tenner. Won't last more than the summer, but presently its all I have to work with .
