Myself and a mate went up to Loch Morlich, by Aviemore, for the weekend. We headed up midday Friday to get all set up before darkness set in...tipi up, woodburner installed and plenty of wood gathered to last the night and next day. In all the years I've been through/past Aviemore I'd never stopped of at Loch Morlich...it's stunning with a massive sandy beach....though it was covered in about 3 inches of snow! I don't think the temperature went above -3 untill the Sunday.

It was a chilled out Friday night with haggis, neaps & tatties with a wee nip or two :D for dinner...A great start to what was a cracking weekend.

We woke to blue skies on Saturday morning with a real nip in the air. First things first, get the woodburner fired up inside and the coffee on. Later it was the full fry up cooked on the fire outside, then Gary made a fabulous pot of soup for lunch. Before having that we had a walk round the loch a bit then drove up to the ski centre...very busy place with everyone making the most of fresh snow.

Saturday evening was again chilling out round the fire...even though it was way below freezing it never felt it at all...it must have been around 11pm before we headed inside the tipi. Dinner was roast chicken and potatoes which was fantastic...first time i'd tried roasting in a cast iron pot over the fire...worked a treat!

Sunday morning the weather had changed with a cold raw wind blowing right up the loch. We didn't even consider starting a fire outside for cooking breakfast on...no point venturing out when you don't have to. We were all packed up by lunch to start heading back to Edinburgh via the tourist route lol...checking out a few places on the way down. One place was Comrie Croft, an Eco Camping / bunkhouse centre not far from Crieff. Looks a great place with good mountain biking routes / walks.

Looking forward to heading back to Loch Morlich in January.

Couldn't have asked for a better spot!!

Again....a cracking weekend!

That looks like a great trip fella, thanks for sharing.

I`m looking forward to a trip over the border in January too.

Lovely pictures too.

That looks like the beach in front of and part of the Forestry Commission campsite. Great pics and it's nice to see the place so quiet. It can be a really really crazy busy place to go. Obviously not in the snow! The last time I was there the campsite was full and there were literally hundreds of folk on that beach!

The woods are absolutley amazing there, very special particularly in the snow. The place is jumping with crested tits and capercaillie and pine martin. The little cafe next to the campsite where the bike hire is, is the best place to see them at their bird table!

Fantastic pictures. It looks and feels really remote, though of course it is extremely accessible. Like woodsmoke, I have mostly been there when the place is heaving with folk.

It just shows the advantages of off season camping - most folk don't do it as they think it will be too cold but you have shown how comfortable winter camping can be with good skills and good equipment.

Great pics, I like the fire box, does it fold up?

It looks a bit like this one... about £20-25 I think.

Now that brings back memories!
I have built sandcastles on that beach, skied the hills, frozen on the campsite, been warm in snowholes/igloos on the banks and loved the area...I must go back soon...
You look to have a good set up there.

Yes I can vouch for that! it's an amazing little place.
We were up at Rothiemurchus Lodge, and called in at the cafe for tea and buns, on our way to the Cairngorm ski centre.
I think I'll have to look into getting back up there:D
cheers

Thanks for the comments! The firebox I'm using is the one Wallenstein has posted up...one of the best pieces of kit I've bought...yes it folds flat and can be stowed without taking too much space. It comes with a top grill which is in 3 sections so you can have it only partly covering to place a pot on and still have logs at the other end feeding the fire.

You can't really miss the site...it's about 5 miles up the road from where to turm off for the ski centre. Sorry don't have a grid ref.

Shewie, when in January are you heading up North? and where are you heading? im still waiting for my brother to finalize dates off his work, and we are heading in the general direction of the Cairngorms,no fixed location as of yet, but if our times and area's clash im game to meet up somewhere.

Not sure yet Andy, I`m pretty flexible to be honest. My usual haunts are anywhere northwest of Glasgow up as far as Fort William. As long as there`s two trees about 5m apart I`ll be happy :D

Just fancy getting up there for a few nights and chilling out.
