Waterproof leather

I have seen allot of boots, like timberlands and helle hansen boots that have waterproof leather. Not a liner but the leather itself is waterproof.

What is in this leather to do this, is not wax as some of them are newbuck!

Silicone injected.(like fabsil) I've been wearing Timberland nubuck boots for 30years (seen the quality drop) but I remember the days when water wouldn't settle on them. Even in wet grass. My current pair will keep alot of water at bay for most of a workingvday, but it soaks through eventually.

Silcone injected at what point in time is what I am wondering, could this be done retrospectively or is it part of the tanning process etc!! I have leather gloves I would like waterproofed

I worded the original post wrong, I have had timberlands since I was 18, destroyed only one pair of euro hikers. I still have my origianl pair of 6" boots but they are well banged up. This winter will see them resoled and relined just for fun to see how long they will actually last!

I was once spraying that Thompsons Water seal on the gable of someone's house and decided to do my workboots with it.
Worked well. The boots didn't last any longer or shorter than the usual six to eight months I get out of them but they were nicely waterproof.

on my leather workboots I use a combination of nikwax aqueous wax and an aloe based leather nourisher. Works really well for keeping the wet out. Been doing some groundworks, which in Devon means standing around in puddles and wet mud, and they haven't let a drop in. They get worn all day every day and are still good 3 years on.

I'll second that. They're not quite what they used to be. The soles wear a lot faster than they used to as well.
