I have thought this before but once again: if one wants water proof leather boots, why leather? Well made rubber boots (made for purpose) would feel exactly the same.
Membrane leather boots are different in the sense that in dry weather they do breath slightly. Though I think that something like the Haix system works more efficiently.
I must admit that I have seen few rubber boots that could be used in place of good leather trekking boots. As an idea it is not impossible.
