I watched both series when it appeared on Lovefilm. Was a slow start but definitely picked up after a couple of episodes. It ended up being compulsive viewing and it took a lot of willpower not to buy a new axe ;)

Haven't watched it yet but I keep getting asked about it by teachers so I'll have to watch it soon.

I'm not very confident that it will be "accurate" because most production companies do little real research into history, they are usually more interested in just presenting the stereo types.

I hope I'm wrong but I'll probably just watch it as a bit of drama.

Hold on lads, I'm not talking about

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vikings_(TV_series) Which is a great 'show' IMHO

But the documentary series, with Neil Oliver

My bad!

I do like Neil Oliver, mainly because his style of presenting has me balled over in laughter I can't explain it. I enjoyed his viking series and have the book, but I can't read it without mimicking his voice which makes it too hard to read through the laughter

Really? Ha! I would love to meet him. I love how he is always walking to/from or around the camera, or appears from behind objects. It is my belief that when the film crew get to location, they release Neil to wander. It is then their job to seek him out and catch him on film to divulge his knowledge, if they can...

I thought it was a pretty good show when I saw it, though agree with Dreadhead that his presentation always puts me in mind of "The Angry Corrie" Thought the show he did with Tony Pollard "Two Men In A Trench" showed him in a much more relaxed light.

There are not many finds of bows from iron age norway, but from findings any longbow would probably do for the viking reenactor. Could be made of yew (import?) or Ash.
Some remains of laminated bows ( Birch and pine) are also found in fennoscandia. These are interesting.
Could be sami (eastern) influence (Snorre Sturlason mention sami Archers in his writings).

Some links for "tvividr bows":
