Hello, I'm new to the forum and wanted to know if anyone would be interested in venison butchery and cooking events? We run them in spring and autumn in Epping Forest (I'm one of the Forest Keepers) and you get to skin, butcher and feast on venison out in the woods. You also get to learn about hide tanning and work with bone and antler. If you want more info, give me a shout or go to http://goo.gl/iUI8bt next one is 11 March!
This is a total shameless plug but I really want to get these excellent events out to people who are interested in broadening their Bushcraft knowledge and trying something a bit different.
Any questions just ask, thanks

Hello :D and welcome to the forum.

I can well see why you posted here. Please have a read through the guidelines; you're allowed to say what you do in your first post, but after that if it's a commercial venture you have to have the Boss's permission first.
Tony is the Boss and he is contactable by the site's private message system under his name. His is the Polar Bear icon.

In the meanwhile though, your job sounds very interesting, and you could maybe tell us a bit more ?

cheers,
Toddy

Welcome

The event sounds interesting. I see that lots of events are arranged in the forest and on the whole that is a good thing. I lived from 1957 to 1962 in Loughton and the forest was our playground. Even at Bank Holidays the interior of the forest was quiet and mostly empty being capable of absorbing many people.. I hope it is still the same despite the organised activities.

Sounds great, I would love something like this but the price is out of my reach. Im sure its a good price for the offer I'm not suggesting otherwise, but a little prohibitive for me personally at my current financial state.

I could be interested as I may have a lot of time off coming up (not in a good way I'm afraid). The pricing on the web page seems a bit odd. Does VAT have to be added or something? Also does each course attendee get any skin/antler/bone/sinew to take away or just some meat?

Cheers,, Bob

Says you get a bag of venison you butchered ... makes sence as its not saleable. So price includes meat and the price of venison you don't need much to get value

I'm good tho have a freezer full

Would like to know how to tan hair on hides . Suspect you came do it to skin left on for a week in the chiller tho

Yeah, I could see the meat was included, but there is a mention of some antler working as well. I really enjoy making things from natural materials and so getting my hands on some more skin, sinew, antler etc would be right up my street. I am also interested in the main part of the course naturally!

I will have to wait and see what Gingerninja replies with....

Hello and Welcome to the Forum...

Looks a good course.. i wouldn't mind learning the process of butchering a full animal. Be good to make a weekend of it.. camping in the forest.....

Ok, have booked myself in for the 11th March. The odd prices are because the ticketing is done by Eventbrite online. Hopefully it will be ok for my other half to come along to watch and take pics, but not take part? I hope that Gingerninja hasnt been scared off and will post some more info when he/she has the nod from Tony.

Hello! Sorry for my tardiness! Yes eventbrite add a fee that's why it's weird. I thought my posted got vetted before it got put up....didn't know I had to check with the polar bear. Will grovel! Epping Forest is a registered charity (run on donations mainly from the City of London). Our event price is as cheap as I can get it (beats the others at £185!) and any profit we do make goes straight back into managing our Forest.

I have been developing the bushcraft provision on Epping Forest for the last year, from zero to events and activities with everything from children's huntergatherer events....making throwing arrows, tracking, skinning butchering and feasting on rabbits...to venison butchery for adults (which you may've heard about on R4....another shameless plug!). We also teach school groups - its awesome now primitive man is on the curriculum!! this is the sexy part of my role. I also investigate and prosecute fly tippers, look for lost dogs, ride round the forest on a quad, open car parks and everything in between!

Would love to have some like minded bushcrafters on our events! If you want any more info, let me know!

Alison

Hi Alison, i have Pm'd you but I have a couple of questions which maybe useful for others on the forum....First, is it OK for my other half to come along and observe/take some pics of me on the course? Second, do you have a useable postcode or other address information regarding where we course participants will be meeting up on the Saturday morning? Unfortunately the map info on your webpage only indicates a piece of woodland next to a road. I dont want to be late :)

Cheers, Bob
