treating wood?

So you have spent a pleasant evening sitting at your fire carving spoons and little bowls.
How do yo protect/finish/treat them to make them water resistant and safe to use?
Also want some advice on what type of woods are best for carving eating/drinking utensils from.

We just oil em with a bit of olive oil, or sometime walnut or hazelnut oil. If you have a walnut or hazelnut handy, you can crush it and use that as a source of oil too.
