Lots of interesting comments, but just to address one of the original poster's specific queries, I almost always carry an axe, (actually a hatchet with a hammer poll), for one reason: A hammer is very often necessary for setting up a tarp in the hard Aussie soil and so you might as well have one with a blade on the other side. Yes, you could try using a baton or rocks, etc but for the sake of avoiding bruised fingers it's easier to take a proper tool.

And the real reason - it's fun to play with.

There is no way I am going anyway near that nozzle! All joking aside I was thinking a few days ago about packing a empty wine bag for a pillow. With a swift mental leap, take full one into the forest and hey presto 3 litres later an instant pillow!!


Have fond memories of trying to refill it with water for use as a water carrier. On reflection, refilling an empty one with water, *** !!!! However it was 24 years ago so I won't be too harsh on myself. But will try to refill an empty one for the challenge, who knows it may replace a water bottle or too.

Sorry rik uk3 you have to bear in mind i was with someone who thinks that bushcraft is a form of pornography! And it had stopped snowing we were just waiting for the cars in front of us to be pulled out of the 3inches of snow that stopped a Bmw X5 from moving on. shame my naff company ford cmax managed to get through most of the snow ok.
