Hi I just thought Id post up a few photos of a friends axe that Ive just finished giving a makeover :D

Axe before I started

073.jpg

This photos a little out of focus but it shows that the poll of the axe has been mushroomed out due to heavy pounding

075.jpg

you can see someones made a mess of the edge

010.jpg

Its really hard to take a decent picture as its so shinny now

It took a couple of hours to get it to this standard , the tools I used were a angle grinder with a flapper disc and wet and dry paper and my dmt sharpeners.
I gave it a final polish with a bench grinder with a polishing mop on it :D

I think it was worth the effort I hope my friend likes it ;)

cheers Russ

Nice work there Warthog, if I send you mine can you do it next.

I have the leather handle one, do you know of a way to replace the grip without destroying it.

It must be nearly twenty years old and starting to show its age.

The grey stuff is plastic metal repair putty.

That is the same pattern I had, gave it to my brother along with a Mora and a combi waterstone to set him off on his bushcraft travels. I also made walking staffs for both him and his wife so they can mooch about in the wilds and have a bit of support for the knees! They liked them!

Oh she certainly does :D
Russ that doesn't look like the same axe at all  :You_Rock_
atb,
M

p.s The axe came from the back of a joiner's van, it was used as a roughing out tool, but he had two and said that this one would clean up well and be easier for me to use than the SFA.........didn't quite believe him 'til now

:D Andy it looks like it needs a major overhaul and a new handle
Im not sure if I could re handle it looks like youd need to buff the peened ends of the tail cap and cut new leather washers to make up the handle
It should be doable at some point

Cheers Mr Warthog, sounds like a good project for this winter. It wont be long before I have to start it though the way the weather is this year.

Thank you.

Andy.

I'd love to know the VRN on that one, it looks like 23FD40. If so, it was one of the CET's I had at Hameln! Of course, that has the Mark 1 Smoke Stack as opposed to the larger Mk 2, so it predates my military service by a few years!

:D

It is 23 FD 40 it's clearer on another photo that was taken at RAF Stanley in november 1982. There was no mess inside so we assumed the crew were safe, how did it loose all its gear do you think.
Mine or mechanical failure.

What used to be reffered to as bastardization. Knicking good bits off a duff machine to keep another one going. I can't believe it is 40, it is still knocking about, or was when i left the Army last year. Gives you some idea how old some of the kit is!

Here is one of the CETs with an ALA fitted. I'm taking the picture, Nick H, Paddy Mac and Pitsy in the photo. lso note the larger Mk 2 smoke stack! :22: It's where the steel wire rope leaves the vehicle.

A shot showing a bit of track bashing, replaceing the track. Note the Health and Safety nonsense in both pictures, is the sky about to fall on our heads?!

Picture004.jpg

I think 40 may be under the tank sheeting in the foreground. As I recall, it's gearbox was knacked!
