We were s'posed to be having the steam engine at the last meet... but there is a problem getting the dynamo up to speed for charging.

Converting from the dynamo to the mobile is easy enough... we worked out you just use a standard charging unit... has everything needed.

I still reckon some fancy gearing will do the trick... problem is what size of gears are needed to get the rpm? Bicycle wheel size? :p
Maybe doesn't have the danger element that you all seem to crave but my favourite YouTube maker does a rather nice water wheel if you have water running through the site.

He also does a version to turn a spit roast for fine dining...

Though I don't think they may have the raw adrenalin rush of going boom! ;)

And there it is... the gearing needed! Nice one GB.... and that water wheel is about the size of a bicycle wheel :D

Come on Mick... a steam-powered wheel is going to revolve at the same speed as that water wheel... so its doable!

Personally I want a crack at that water wheel... that just looks awesome, and given the right location... that would charge a mobile phone in a couple of hours.

Roll on spring and the return of the camping gear to pound stores as they had had a lot of those dynamo hand torches in stock last year. These seem like they would be a good starting point for any bushcraft power station.

Now there is an idea!

It seems to be more about torque than rpm lads. It spins pretty quickly ungeared but doesn't have the rotational power to get the dynamo putting any meaningful power out. I tried an oscilloscope across it and we're talking mV here

Fair play, but Bishop's idea has legs...

If a hand-powered torch setup like this can generate 12v... surely with some messing around a water wheel or steam-powered wheel can do the same?
