The lady swings a doublebit

I saw this elsewhere and enjoyed watching it. A technique I haven't seen before. Two videos:

AxeConnected

First clip just looks like hard work and its not the best wood to split, the second one has straighter grain wood which is much simpler to split. Its also very dry I think, makes a good POP when it splits.
Personally I'll stick with my maul which I think is a far better shape to split wood, not blown away by narrow axes for splitting wood. In fact since chainsaws have got good I'm not really blown away by the idea of felling axes full stop. They sure look nice and I can see it for somewhere carrying a chainsaw (and fuel+PPE) to get to the tree is a pain but even then in a lot of cases I think I maybe prefer the idea off a decent crosscut saw.

The second clip half reminds me of those Bikini Girls With Machine Guns* clips.

*Yes, I have heard The Cramps song of that title.

Of course, for silly music few things beat skeet surfin' (and of course how silly can you get)

Actual axe content: a version of the twist technique is handy also with a small axe when spitting thin stuff: hold one end of the stick, rest the other end on a block of some sort, hit with the axe with a twisting motion.

Must resist the temptation to comment ! Would wear the keyboard out , don't do it Ivan...

wish I had your willpower :lmao:

The twist as you hit it techinique has some merit, but the lift your right foot as it hits also has some effect too. Mostly negative.

Thankyou Biker , you have restored my faith in humanity , in all fairness the Chris DeBurgh woman did as good a job as the dangerous, sorry serious one (stop it ! )

I have no use for a doublebit axe either but some people like them. Personal preference. I too use a maul for most splitting and a chainsaw for bigger stuff.
It was the 'twist' technique I found interesting. We all do it with smaller wood (as mentioned by forestwalker) but this is the first I've seen it applied in this manner.
The blog also has some interesting reading for those of us that are axe lovers. We may or may not agree but it still makes for good reading, going back to the beginning of it.

And ''Bikini Girls With Machine Guns* clips.'' ??? I fail to see the relevance or connection.

Now that's scary!:lmao:

I can feel it coming on ! if i have a drink i just know it will haemmorrage out of me ! its a lie down or an essay , i will say this much .

A bikini clad girl with a machine gun , would in my eyes be a lot safer , and less likely to cause herself or anyone else for that matter injury (just an opinion of course )

C'mon, let it all out-you'll feel better:D

Ok ! i may be sometime compiling my little piece, i have resisted the temptation since very early this morning , when i first spat my coffee out ! Warning it might not be pretty , but i mean no offence .

I have rung the brief and he is on his way over .

"I'll be back "

Very frustrating watching a youtube vid expecting something good (or bad depending on your point of view) to happen........& nada.......it must have been a windless day & her attributes too firmly held in place........she doesn't handle a chopper all that well either...:(

Still we've got Ivan's piece to look foreward to.:)..

Ok here it is for what it is worth, in no particular order ! I was a tree surgeon and log merchant for many years , and long before commercial splitters etc , the good old axe was the tool, i fail to see any point whatsoever in a doubleit axe ( maybe throwing , smaller scale or ancient combat ) but with respect the Canadians and Americans do . Bot for splitting logs it a waste of time (might look good on the shoulder )

The maul thing is down to preference , i have used both that and felling axe sucessfully depending on type of wood ,tiredness etc. Splitting wood is a technique ,no sorry an art . In both videos they were perfect logs , white hearted straight grained hardwood, so brilliant for a novice, but to show a video ( even for a laugh ) of someone with no protection and barefoot is down right stupidity. sorry going back to the doublebit thing , when you have struck your chosen log and you get it stuck , it is a more dangerous tool to overhead reverse strike the log , and you cannot strike the back of your wedged in axe.

Anyway , no block to split on (unless it is straight grained ash , and you are speed splitting for a competion ) is also dangerous , and if you were doing it on soft ground you would be hitting your heart out , wasting energy. If you have time and help , the old addage of "you lay em ,i'll fryem " works well .

Clear your splitlogs (trip hazard ) matters too, have your vehicle downside of you to load , don't want to be expelling energy loading up hill or carrying/throwing them any further than you have to.

Make sure you try and split your wood the way it grew . Some people will never be able to split logs as long as they have got a hole in their @rse.

I am sure there will be more to come , but for now those two vids ,are as wrong on as many levels as multi storey car park theft .

Furthermore , you should never split logs in a dress (regardless of colour or style ) in poor light oh yeah ! in one of the vids she does use a block , looks like granite ! silly cow never mind blunting your axe ( not so important, jury is still out on sharpness of an axe purely for log splitting ) spark to the petrol container she would doubtlessly have open nearby.

You should never split logs with an axe with a loose head , damaged or shortened shaft . And if you insist on doing logs with a gransfers small forest axe ,please kneel down , or one day you will pay the price , obviously not when drunk or tired , take a breaher , it's not a race .

maybe more , who knows !

i must have missed that meet Aaron harhar

Yeah me too. Think I regret not going to it? Every single day!! :lmao:

Did laugh at your comments too Blacktimberwolf. We're on the same page there mate.

Ivan some good points you've raised there and I agree withtem all. Over here every winter we get a delivery of seasoned logs for the woodburner and it's my job to cut them to length then spilt and stack 'em. often I stack them then cut them to length, risky but quicker. Anyway my preferred weapon of choioce to split them is a Merlin or Maul as it's know in Engrish. basically a steeped wedge axe with a sledge hammer back to it. I worked with a mate and he and I were splitting some big rounds 24+ inches in diameter and some of those took some doing to split so we pounded the back of the wdge into the rounds using the other maul. Worked a treat and because of the toetectors we had on there were no injuries... but Christian did ladder his stockings and I laughed so hard my mascara ran.

And the whole point of the first video , i think was the twist method , you WILL sprain your wrist or worse hit shin etc, i have no problem with women in the woods or splitting logs , but put them inside a tyre(the logs ,not the women !) (only car ,the bounce factor ) or better still a strap to hold a few logs together, get your stance right , get someone who knows what they are doing to show you how to hold and swing the axe properly ( a bit like having your first golf lesson )

Nice one Biker , one point on the whacking a maul with another one , do not attempt this with anything other than finest quality steel ( if it says made in china , chuck it away ! ) same with wedges bury the rubbish so as no one can hurt themselves , splinters or shards of crap steel will not only lind you but ,with the energy exerted will penetrate clothing and embed in flesh , even through quailty stockings and that little black number we all split logs in !
