thatching

Ok, I've made a standard lean to shelter in the woods, and was wondering; what do I use to thatch the roof poles? I cant just pile leaves etc on it as they will just rot and decompose so what do I do?

Well if it's long term, you cannot really beat turf but it is not very environmentally friendly. But tbh there is nothing wrong in a debris and leave "thatch". Many coverings were used in the past, everything really, e.g bracken, heather and grass.
