Recently I was told that some types of traditional mukluk boots utilized the ash tanned hair-on lower leg skin of deer. I've had a bit of a google but can't find any information on this technique. Does anybody here have experience with ash tanning that they'd be kind enough to share? Is the ash source important? Is it simply rubbed into the well fleshed skin? Is oiling also necessary etc etc?
