Of course you should! :) I like the SA Trangia, as the two pans (billy and frying pan) can also both be used over an open fire quite easily.

Most hardware stores.

No. But see answer to Q1 above.

also would the burner work in a kelly kettle ?

Probably, but not something I've ever tried. May work, but probably a lot slower than burning twigs.

In cold weather, insulate the burner from the ground with a couple of twigs, this help speed up the cooking times. These are slow boiling units so any improvement to performance is a bonus :)

Another couple or three tips:
1: If you're not too bothered about saving the odd oz here and there then try and get hold of a stainless sweding army trangia. They're a lot more robust.

2: add water to your meths. 9 parts meths to 1 part water. It helps to prevent your pans from getting covered in black soot.

3: The burner would work in a kelly kettle but as previously said, it would take ages to boil. The idea with a kelly kettle is to get a good fire going inside to the fill surface area of the kettle gets hit with intense heat. The surface area of the swedish burner's exhaust is about the same diameter as the exhaust on the kelly kettle and therefore it would just act like a chimney and take all the heat straight out the top with very little heat transfer.

Just buy a burner on its own £10. Then make a hobo stove , you then have a big smile every time you make a brew or cook your dinner.:)

Go see the hobo stove gallery on the kit chatter forum.

With nothing to do, I have just fired up my (used £10.20 delivered on evilbay) SAT after recompressing the wicking material with “BLUNT” darning needle, meths to soak, then top off with 5ml in reservoir, 500ml tap temp water, next to ideal conditions in the kitchen. results just under 2.20 mins to prime, rolling boil 6.20 mins, snuffed with a little meths left... That will do me.

For hexi-blocks make a little carriage to sit on the pot stand, so it sits between 3-4cm below the pot... (ex frying basket works great, cuts with snips and folds away).

I changed the SA burner for a standard Trangia one soon after getting it - lighter, faster burning (ie quicker cooking) and more fuel efficient. It's a heavy set but if you're not carrying it far (or you don't care) it's good and solid; you can't really go wrong. With the top pan you could probably light a small fire in the windshield too and cook on that; dunno why I never thought of it

I'm wondering about using the burner with a kelly kettle. I don't have one, only ever saw one being used by andy_e, so can't check it out myself. I thought that kelly kettles were essentially hollow inside, wide base, fluting to the top. They heat up the walls of the kettle by igniting the gas from the wood or whatever you're burning, thats why they are so good. Or have I missed the point of them? So using a meths burner in them would, if the above is right, seem a waste of the / fuel as the heat wouldn't be enough to heat the sides as it would go straight out the top ?

As I say I may have completely missed it here, so if anyone with a kelly kettle could help me out here, I'd greatly appreciate it. :)

dose anyone know what price it costs for a steel trangia

As promised here my report about the snuskburken:

- the order placed on 19-8 and today it was delivered (10,60 eur delivery charge)
- both the complete Trangia (12 eur) as the separate pots(6 eur) I ordered were unused, only some almost unnoticeable shelf wear and everything was in original wrapping
- the stand was dated 1968 as was the little bottle, three crowns on everything. The pots are not dated and show only the three crowns plus the text 5020Cr (I think the steel composition, Cr being chrome).

So, one happy customer here. An idea for the 'group buy' specialists is to follow this lead.

Now an overall comparison with the aluminium SA trangia:

- much more robust (it figures)
- the large alumimium pot weighs 300 gr and the little pot 180 gr
- the large steel pot weighs 480 gr and the little pot 300 gr
- the burner and the stand are in both cases 400 gr, the full bottle of meth 200 gr
- I'll do the math for you: complete alu set 1080gr, steel set 1380 gr.
- the burner for the steel set was made by SVEA (1968) and the for the alu set made by Trangia (not dated)

This a complete Stainless steel Trangia and for those who want to upgrade they also sell the pots separately
