Just by a show of hands would people be kind enough to quickly write what phone network thry are with and what sort of signal they get at the site?

It's quite important I stay in touch and last time I couldn't send if receive texts at all and only managed a few mins of phone calls before getting cut off. And had to go right over the other side of the field. I'm on O2 with an iPhone 4.

I'm going to buy a cheap pay as you go phone for the weekend as they are only £20 but ill get it on the network that people get the best reception with.

Thanks.

Asda do phones on EE which used to be orange.

Stu,
I'll get one and if its cheap and works well you could get one out of the kitty then charge the next 10 or so new members £2 admin/joining fee until its paid for.

I've had a slow day at work and managed to do a bit of google-fu regarding the signal in the area.

I had no idea but the big networks have coverage maps.

They have maps which show if the signal is...
- indoors and outdoors
- outdoors
- no service

Without breaking operational security I won't be too specific and post the pictures, but if you want to know then just google coverage map O2 ee or vodaphone.

Here are the results of 45 mins googling.

O2 shows that it has a large area of 'no service'.
The Suffolk Bushcraft Group's permission is right on the edge of this area.
For the post code of the compass pub it says
2G coverage 1 out of 4bars
3G no service
4G no service.

EE shows 2G coverage everywhere, 3G in most places apart from the other 2 woodlands which I won't name.
For the compass pub it says
2G - 3 out of 4 bars
3G - 1 out of 4 bars
4G - no service.

Vodaphone
No post code rating but the map shows they have no 3G or 4G service but total coverage on 2G.

Ok… I'll say it: fire steels are difficult to to master. There. I came clean.

I just gathered some tinder for this weekend, including what I consider to almost be cheating: I purchased some fatwood from Light My Fire. I figured that it would flare up easily in my back garden, but no, it doesn't. It lit up easily with a lighter, so I know that it's my firesteel technique. I'm looking forward to this weekend!

Stu… I'll be calling you around 9am on Saturday… have you done this before?

OK, thats no problem, we work it like that every time a new person to the group comes, one thing I will say is call about 10 mins before you get to the Pub as the Phone signal is not that good for some phones there

What steel's do you mean? is it Ferro Rod or Flint and Steel?,

if your talking a About a Ferro Rod you should be able to light Fatwood scraping easily, you will have a problem with a flint and steel as the spark is not hot enough to easily catch anything apart from flash tinders or getting an ember in charcloth.

One way you can light Fat wood is to wrap a small bit of cotton wool around it then throw a spark at the cotton wool

Sure, I get that… but it was a quick, run out to the garden and play with new toys attempt. I didn't scrape it to dust, I simply made a small pile of shavings and used a ferro rod. It's technique, certainly, and I'll figure it out in the woods.

Only Two problems.....

1. No tea breaks as we can use the Free tea machine anytime.. and eat when we want..lol
2. Only 1/2 HR Lunch Break....

Both of these problems mean only ONE thing....... less time I get to look at BCUK.. and more time in the evening on the Forum...
