I'm looking to scavange some steel to start a knife project! where is good places to look about, what things to looks for, ideally 2-3mm thickness as i have no way that i know of to grind the thickness down!
the first dozen or so blades I made were done only with files, I don't think any where thinner than 3mm. Just get a new file and be patient
Cromwells is a good place to get the odd bit of O1 tool steel, most other places require you to buy lots at any one time (especially if you want something other than boring old O1). Scrounged/scrap sources would include old saw blades, files, springs, etc; but they would all need annealing or forging.
Files, for either stock removal or forging. I forged my first knife yesterday, and used an old file. Circular saw blades, crosscut saw blades, leaf springs, anything with a high carbon content will do.
