A staff is useful for hill walking as the extra length assists when descending a steep slope. It is also useful for measuring the depth of water before wading. On level ground and about town, I use two walking sticks, you have to get them the right length to use them properly, whereas a staff can be gripped at various points.

When I last stocked up on Tru-oil at my local gunsmith he said the "stick makers" love the stuff. Might be worth a shot and certainly does very well to seal bows plus its easy to apply and dries fast.

I'm always on the lookout for interesting sticks. I wrap them in plastic bags when I'm not working on them for the first couple weeks so the moisture leaves them without checking, then fit a piece of copper pipe as a ferrule, and usually finish them with oil.
