Spotting scope recommendations ?

Im after a general wildlife spotting scope, but dont know what t get. I realise with optics that ou get what you pay for, but i only have a budget of £80.

What would you recommend ?

Hi Paul,

To get a good all round scope for £80.00 will be hard. Although these are slightly over the £80.00 mark, I would take a look at Optirons MM2. Also, I have just started selling a new scope for a charity that I work for. At first I thought it would be pants, as it comes with a stay on tripod and kit lens, but I was blown away by how good it is for it's money. It's made by Swift and costs £120 and can be hand-held. If you happen to be local to Essex I don't mind showing it to you.

At that price,check out 2nd hand Opticron.
Try dealers for traded goods they need to offload.
You'll find them in 'Birdwatching' or 'Birdwatch' mags, usually for sale in most good newsagents.

Try www.birdforum.net , they've got loads of info and a classified section.

p.s. An Opticron MM2 becomes a different scope when used with the HDF eyepieces as opposed to normal and HR ones.

They keep appearing in aldi, so could be worth keeping an eye out, and they are no where near £80 !.

And another vote for the Opticron mono BGA 10x42 but with the addition of the 2.5X extension to get a 25x42
(if used with the 2.5X it really needs the tripod mount and a mini tripod due to inevitable hand wobble)

That's what I bought and it's awesome; waterproof, shockproof, excellent optics and very lightweight and small size ofr what you get. Highly thought of amongst the willdlife watchers out there.
