Somebody employ me

Employ yourself.....

It's an option that can't be beaten in my opinion.

Decide what you want to do, and do it freelance.

Exactly what im thinking of doing Wayland, had enough of the rat race and looking to get out, would rather be skint and happy than well paid and bloody miserable for another 20 years:(

When someone is an equal opportunities employer, they still need people suitable for the job. If your not capable of doing the job, you cannot have it. I don't know exactly what a radio artificer does, but if it included wiring jobs where you have to differenciate between coloured wires, with the best will in the world, a severely colourblind person may not be able to carry that job out. Regardsless of race, ethnic origin, sexual inclination, beliefs, faiths or physical or mental imparement, the British Armed Forces and MoD can consider you for employment in a suitable position.

See, every job has a down side. As long as you are aware of both sides, it's an option that may be considered. I know alot of people who have not been to a war zone and a lot of them have. Only a few have died, but many, many more have not.

As a career, the Forces have a lot to offer and i for one am coming to the end of mine. I'm going on to do other things, but i have not regretted for a minute my time in. OK, maybe there were one or two moments when i thought 'What have i put myself in this position', but they were fleeting and rare.

If anyone is considering a career in the Armed Forces, all i will say is this. By all means listen to what the AFCO has to say, but, if you get the opportunity, ask a serving or ex member what it is really like. Get a rounded view and weigh up the pro's and con's. Be honest with yourself and make sure it is what YOU want to do. Don't be pressured into it, but you can do a lot worse.

Yes there are risks, but if you look at the gains; self respect, achievment, camraderie, good wages, trade training, board and lodgings, travel, experience, job security, possible pensionable engagment, diversity, good natured inter service banter and a couple of medals as well as stories for the camp fire, there's a lot available.:)

Yeah, its a matter of personal choice.

About 70% of the men on both sides of my family alive and dead have been in the forces through the years.

I can't say Iv never thought about it, but I only considered it as a dead end kind of thing if I failed everything. I also have a friend in the engineers and a friend going into an infantry roll come next September.

The myth of it is though, that you can't actually get hold of any of these Eastern types in Afghanistan, etc. What makes you think that there gonna face off in conventional combat with a bunch of hairy backsided, pumped up Brits or Americans? There not. There gonna take a few pot shots and set off some IEDs. To hell with the Taliban, leave 'em all to it.

Sooooo then there's no point in going to Afghanistan or Iraq, the Taliban would just stop the bombings and shooting innocent civilians if we pulled out. Like the IRA would have done in Ireland or the Nics in Belize. Inform the MOD at once I don't think they realize this simple solution.
Not every serviceman or woman is sent to an area of conflict only those who are needed or volunteer (like me for a reason) and have a skill required in theatre.

By the way there are jobs going at the Eden project for summer staff.

I dont think we should get into a debate about the armed forces! The lad is asking for career ops.

People who are colourblind have been found to have much better shape recognition and can identify people hiding in undergrowth much easier than a colour seeing person can (think about it , must preditors dont need colour vision)
Some countries round the world train colourblind people to be sharp shooters, I dont know if the uk does But there you go you colourblind people - You can all be assasins!

Appreciate what your saying Firecrest, very true in a great deal of cases. The only reason i mentioned the electrical wiring was because of the trade mentioned and it's colour relevance. I'm sure if he had gone into the careers office, smiled and said ' I wanna be an assassin' they would have jumped at the chance to employ him and train him in the dark arts! ;) Just for clarification, i was just taking the rise in that last bit! :D

There are many opportunities for fit young men in the world today, the forces being only one. Have you ever considered volunteer work for a charity overseas, or an Israeli Kibbutz? These places do not pay in monetary terms, but are priceless for life experience. Odd job man, travel guide/ companion, i think the national Trust use volunteers as well. Just a thought.

For a pacifist Sharp88 does a mean twisting of the knife.

You may not agree with the armed forces but thank God and them they will do what you aren't prepared to.

My father and one of my closest friends bumped into each other in Bastion last year and the only regret of my life is withdrawing from RCB.

There's always the other option fellas - you can teach, so work hard and be miserable AND be broke with it.

As for job prospects for a Geography graduate....

What is it they say about arts grads? Would you like fries with that......? Sorry :o

It's very tough for you and the only other Geog grad I know my age volunteered for the National Trust for 2 years before they gave him a job, now he's a Head Warden for English Heritage and I don't know how he can afford to live on what they pay him.

Last piece of advice - ignore wishes of current girlfriend - that's why I left RCB. If you are that strong, she'll support your choice rather than imposing hers, another eternal regret linked to regret 1.:dunno:

Oh God, the Crabs have gone all Biggles on us! They'll be on about their Sopwiths and Pimms next, pass the Brylcreem old boy! Never quite understood why blokes in the RAF got a beret from stores and just plonk is straight on their heads, no shaping whatsoever! Got to love the boys in blue! :D

Cheeky b'stard!

I'll have you know that mine is very well shaped :approve: . Furthermore, I work at an army garrison and I have seen a significant number of Chinook landing pads.

Anyway, it's not Sopwiths...it's Spitfires! Raaaaah! (Dambusters' Theme, running round front room making goggle shapes with hands) Nah nah nah naah na-na-na-naah, etc...:D

"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.": George Orwell

Its one of the greatest ironies of life is that the right to hold pacifist and liberal views only exist because brave people think otherwise.

To all of you who are serving or have served - my thanks

Couldn't have put it bettter myself Red .
The treatment when we come back limbless and disfigured with mental problems that we get from our society is disgusting. Most of all, the contempt from the people who sent us in the first place is unbeleivable.
It's because I was so good at what i did these people can sleep easily at night, I sleep very badly now.
I hope that didn't sound like bragging.

I was not going to add anything to this already over armed thread, until I came across this post.
Yeah the last line is that you'l most likely get sent into a warzone and loose your friends and quite possibly yourself. The prospect of money, free clothes, food and accommodation is nothing compared to human life.

And without wanting to sway anyones opinion, my answer would be..
"... that we willingly laid ours on the line so that you can have your's!"

Spam, my Dad was a Tankie, therefore I have a Tankie's berret and suffered much for it,
13 yrs RAF, Dual trade Apprentice - AKA Trenchards Brats!

Jed - only just caught on that you're a Rock Ape!

Ogri the trog

The trouble with CV's in general I find is that they contain only what the CVee wants the future employer to know and can be a little narrow or, may I say, a fantasy of how they would like to be percieved. Always to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Jed = Rock + over Cpl hence more than 22 yrs service.

This has rather drifted off topic.

As pointed out... I didnt put on any skills etc...

Uni grad in Geog, last job was newt surveying for an environmental consultants.. Was fun, but a short contract.
Starting studies again in 3months... so it's only short term, not really fussed as to the job, not squemish.

Considered the forces for a while current girlyfriend aint to keen though. I have Wwoofed, and found it a dissappointing experience. Ideally need something that pays and Wwoof (to my best knowledge) doesn't/

Cheers guys and gals.

Matt is only talking about needing something for SUMMER WORK, not a long term career, so as interesting as all the talk about time in the Services is, it isn't really what was being asked for. So, can anyone tear themselves away from discussions of military life and think of some summer jobs that are more interesting than working in a call centre?

Sadly, I am an aerospace engineer, and the second thing that you lose in that field, after your soul, is your imagination  so I am not well placed to make suggestions. I can see the problem though. Three months is pretty short and a lot of people giving a job for that time are going to want someone who already has the skills. I once managed to blag a job with an engineering firm for the summer, using CAD to improve records of their existing tooling. I had used CAD before and it would have been hard to have hurt anything if I screwed up. The noteworthy part was that they were not recruiting, I got in by cold calling around the local industrial estate. Cold calling doesn't offer great odds, but I don't think it should be discounted either.

What are the chances of finding some work on a building site? I know a couple of people who do that on and off, or to help fund their lives as craftsmen.

Since I am fairly ignorant of what jobs are genuinely open to someone who has studied Geography, I did a little searching around. It doesn't look like it is as limiting as some degree courses, but its still looks like its going to require some applied imagination to pick a path. I found this site kinda interesting. This isn't so much for Matt as it is for everyone else.

Very best of luck Matt.

Right.

I have just removed Sharp88's last post. Enough about the military and the politics of where they get sent. I tried to gently redirect the thread back on topic, but alas Sharp88 wanted another say.

Sharp88, I would offer to split your post into a separate thread, along with all the other digressions about the services, but since its all getting a little too political, and I can see it getting quite heated if left to run, I won't.

Either try to give Hobbit boy some relevant advice, or leave the thread alone.

I dont think we can take this guy seriously, he hasnt shown us his CV yet...

I'll take him seriously out of courtesy, and anyone who put their CV on a public forum would be a fool. In this instance I think pointers, help and hints are required.

Long shot here - PGL sort of thing, if it's outside and 3 months work you be wanting?
Shambling Shaman mentioned a short term Ghillie job..... that sounds awesome.
