I've just bought a cheap maul for splitting firewood for my new simple, self reliant life: http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=68995

It didn't come with a guard so i'm planning on cobbling something together to make it less of a liability. I also want it to be safe to use as a sledge hammer for other tasks, so for this I feel a good guard is vital.

I don't want to spend any money making this so, i'm looking at what i have available. Seems like its going to be some combination of wood, bike tire, inne tube and thin leather.

I haven't come up with a vision of what its going to be like yet and so I wondered if anyone has any ideas?

Any ideas using other easily available materials are welcomed.
Cheers
