Thank you sir! It was a kit, but we did a bit of extra work on it. My daughter did a lot of the sanding and picked out the design for the sound holes.

Managed a couple of weeks of self restraint....
....then gave in and ordered one. A black walnut kit from folkcraft.
Didn't know folk sold them in kit form, thanks for the pointer. Quite looking forward to making it up. :)

That crossed my mind, even the photos on the web site showed a fair variation in grain.

Before ordering I spoke to a pal of my dads who's an instrument maker(luthier?). He's offered to help out if I want to borrow clamps, use the hotbox, etc, and said if I didn't like the soundboard that came with it(or messed up cutting the holes) he'd sort me out with another one.:)
Funnily enough he used to make dulcimers but they were exotica - a bit outside my price range. My dad has one and it's a gem. If you take a peek at his guitars and mandolins you'll get the idea.

I'm so poor I can't afford a shed. :D

I do all my knives in my cellar.

DSCI0009.jpg

This is my main work area.

DSCI0001.jpg

My drill and a sander that has about had it.

DSCI0006.jpg

The old coal shute makes a great heat treat area.

I do all my hammering and stamping on this. As soon as I have the time I plan to hire a still saw and cut the piece of rail in two. That will get me a small peening post and a bench anvil.

It's a bit dark and gloomy and very, well, cellary I suppose. :D

Cybertrix,

I like your cellar shop. Seems like a good atmosphere to make knives.

I would never get by with striking an anvil in my cellar, that's why my shop is so far from the house.

I've got two sheds; OH has a bit of one other one...........

One of mine is a proper shed - got stores, beekeeping equipment, potting stuff and tools in. My other shed - summerhouse-type one - is full of weaving looms, a sewing machine and fleeces. Until this afternoon, when we have to womanhandle a piano in there too............
I'll post pics up when they're nice and tidy - how girlie is that? :)

My carpentry tools live in the massive toolsafe of my van so the sheds more bike related than outdoorsy...

To all those who fell shed envy, remember we all have to start somewhere. My shed is

a bench seat in the spare/guest/computer/box room. my garden is 13x16 (that's feet) and already has a tool store/bike store. If i put anything else in it, it would be all shed space and no garden.

Tidying your shed is a well known work avoidance strategy. You know the situation, you've several things you should be doing, they're all going to avoid fiddling around, faffing on etc etc, maybe I'd just better tidy my shed first. If that fails, popping to the shop to buy some tool you've been needing / meaning to buy for ages is another good one :D

After a house move and busy job which has seen my summer pass by in a flash, I've finally got my new inner sanctum sorted. It's got a place for big jobs, like wood and metal work...

a place for small jobs in leather and general tinkering...
