Sunny Wales!
Something I have been toying with for a while is to set-up my own blog... Its going to be mostly food/cooking related with easy to understand recipes that can be cooked over a Campfire, or in a traditional Dutch Oven. Anyhooo...

I could do with some advice for an easy to set-up page but to be honest, I know nothing about the subject!

Any pointers would be gladly received :)

Thanks in advance, al.

I started one on blogspot to record canoe trips and the like, click on the Heading North bit on my sig :)

It's pretty simple really, you just choose a design and then you just add photos and text as you go along. When you want to add another blog just click on new post and off you go.

Hasn't someone on here just done that? Not that you shouldn't. I've tasted your cooking, and any suggestions you make about food are well worth listening to.

If you set one up, I'd subscribe.

Cool Rich... Looks straight-forward!

I just looked at that site a few min's ago, but it wanted to sign straight into my g-mail account. I was a little dubious about getting spammed or passwords... So I thought it best to ask advice first!

Nice photo's btw, al.

Yep, I seen a thread the other day about something similar. I guess it gave me the motivation to put one foot forward. If it helps someone (hopefully) enjoy their night more around the campire... why not :)

Blog can be interesting reading.
What I would say is either do it or don't do it.
Ie if you are having a blog, put up posts regularly or people will not bother going back.
I run a few websites and blogs and its the content thats the hard bit.
As the saying goes the internet is vast..... and 90% crap.
Go for it I would be interested to read.

funnily enough I've just started a blog. I've been taking daily pictures when I'm working with me smart phone and sticking them on FB mates kept telling me to blog so I figured why not. :)

Not sure anyone but me and a few friends will read it but hey ho :)

I have a google mail account so went with blogspot. dead easy to set up.....maybe not so easy to keep it going lol....starts tomorrow....first day back at work after creating it.

Good luck with it.

Thanks for that salan... I've never had one so I think the main idea- in my 'way of thinking' was to be able to add a reference/link under my siggy, to help people try something different, or at-least try something on a basic level and hopefully start creating their own interpretation, and, having fun doing so. Nothing complicated, just fun around a campfire.

It was my main profession for several years, and something I still take great pleasure from. I think the greatest pleasure really was watching people do it for themselves!

I'm not overly worried about a fan base, I would rather have one person say, I enjoyed that. Which would be more than enough for me.

Regards, al.

I think Blogging is good if you have something to say and say it regularly as said previously. Take a look at a few good blogs and see what you can do that might interest people. If you don't keep renewing content then its not really worth doing. Do it right or not at all I think the saying is. Good luck.

I downloaded the wordpress app for free onto my work BB as an afterthought. Kinda thought I would blog about my attempts to do wildcamping and trying to cut weight. My lessons learnt as I learn them sort of thing. I know I can talk but not so sure I can talk sense and not just a load of waffle (check out my recent posts and you will see I can talk carp and ramble on a bit). Anyway wordpress is available as an app on most smartphones and your PC via internet for free. I know a lot of bloggers use that too and I've seen some nice blogs on it.

My walking group use blogspot and its kinda annoying format. Easy to get started but I do think it is limited. That is why Wordpress interested me.

Maybe someone should start a blog about their attempts at starting a blog!!! :D

Go for it and put a link in your signature and of course let us all know the link. I guess you'll have a ready-made audience from BCUK from day one!! Just how many days after that depends on you and how serious you are.

Some fantastic input so far with thanks!

Paul, and greensurfingbear... I see what you mean about keeping it interesting! I've only been into the scene (sounds a little dubious :) ) for the near best part of a year bushcraft related wise, but I think its fair to say as a small group in sunny (ok, I lied) south wales, we have had some fantastic nights with good company, good food and good times.

It would give me great pleasure to share those moments (so it may head towards a bit of everything) and it would be mostly about the food for the night, foraging (I'm still learning the basics) to simple days out up the local woodlands with my daughter and the dutch oven.

If I could ask, whats a general timescale for updates to keep it interesting... It would probably work out about one a fortnight, but there could be rambles thrown in, new discovery's or just general updates.

As said, I'm totally new to blog's in general... I think I've read a handfull, let alone subscribed! Willing to put in the legwork, talking and piccy's is something I enjoy daily anyway s :)

I don't think all blogs are aimed at keeping the audience happy but if you start to draw a crowd then there is that pressure to keep it fresh. One of the main reasons I started mine was to share my trips with friends and family who don't do internet forums but still wanted to see what I get up to.

It's nice to have a place where you can keep stuff as a resource for sharing, or even treat it as a diary or timeline for events that have happened. Some blogs I read are pure text and are quite often specialised in a particular pursuit. You'll probably get a following if the contents are interesting, how you go about doing that is entirely up to you though, I think that's what makes blogging interesting.

Thanks for that again Rich... an on-line journal is pretty much where I would like to be at.

If its of some use to those that view it, all the better but it would really just be about my adventures as a retired chef and the simple pleasures of outdoor related cooking :)

And hopefully be of edible context LoL!

Hi there
I've built a few blogs, both hosted and ones you host on your own internet space. The best system I've used is Wordpress. As a beginner I'd opt for the www.wordpress.com hosted type. Very simple to set up yout give you a fair amount of possible designs.
All you need to do is open a account, its free and choose a design. There are loads of tutorials on Youtube... just type in Wordpress and away you go.

For the more technically minded Wordpress.org allows you to host the blog and is far more customisable, but needs a good knowledge of web site building.

cheers
Gareth

For me, blogging is more a personal journal. It's a way that I can keep a record of what me and wife get up to because we do quite a lot!
Of course there are commercial blogs and blogs that are more specified - like bushcraft for instance. I just like documenting everything that we do not just the bushcrafting side.

Like many people we take a digital camera with us. But what do you do with the pics? Many a comedian have told jokes about the irony of the digital camera convenience. Only to have 1000's of photos clogging up your hard drive never being shown to anyone!

Enjoy bloggin al, don't worry about what we think just give it a go!

Joel

If you already have a google account then 'blogger' or 'blogspot (same thing)' is probably the way to go. You can also set up a google 'profile' page where your various internet 'presences' can be tied together, so flickr albums, blog, etc. (example google profile page 1, example google profile page 2).

Easy to understand recipes sound good, looking forward to it.

Many people use 'RSS' to subscribe to blogs etc. In my experience people who post worthwhile entries less frequently get to stay on my subscription list, bloggers who rattle off too much tat, too often are deleted.

I hope this helps.

:)

A second recommendation for wordpress - take a few minutes to familiarise yourself and it's nice and easy to quickly get something out there. Also wordpress apps for android etc if you want to update from out in the wild!
