Ive fly fished all my life with the occasional sea fishing trip, but theres a bit of a grey area between "sea fishing" and fishing off a pier. Does anyone know if you need a license for any of these? Ive searched all over the net and cant find anything for sea fishing, only freshwater licenses. Would be great if someone can confirm it for me if theres any sea fishers on the forum.

I thought that Paul, but there are 3 piers in Swansea, and one of them charges you to fish on it, thats why im a bit confused. Oh well, it must just be for the use of that pier, as it stretches out further than the rest of them. So your paying for the advantage.

You don't need a licence to fish in the sea with rod and line but you do need permission from the landowner of the place you fish from.If you are fishing from a privately owned pier then the owner can charge whatever he wants for you to fish there.

As has been said before the pier are just making money by charging for permission to fish from it, a lot of piers do this. I suppose the piers are privately owned so the owners can charge if they want to.

You can also fish tidal rivers and estuaries without a licemce as long as you stay where they are tidal. There are several rivers near me, the Teign and the Dart to name two, where you are fishing in a river, but because it's tidal you don't need a licence. As has been said, you will need the owners permission if it is private land on the coast or up the river, but there is usually some public land somewhere, so this has never caused me a problem.

Bear in mind that a "several" fishery gives the landowner claims on some estuary or even sea fishing. Thus the Duchy of Cornwall claims a "several" fishery for all species on the Helford estuary in Cornwall. Very strange because the local sea-fisheries Committee also seem to have jurisdiction in that they publish a booklet saying when you can fish for bass from a boat for example and hotels advertise fishing on the Helford as one of their attractions.

Confused? So are they all. Locals just fish.
