Managed to run my sak blade down the edge of some glass at work doh!!!
The side of the blade was so rough it was like a flippin file!
Now I know it is only sak but I had just got it nice and sharp so was pretty p*****.
Anyway got it nice again with the dc4 but cant help but getting the dc4 rash on the blade. What am I doing wrong? The knife is back to shaving sharp but I dont seem to sharpen it without getting the rash?!?! Bad technique I guess.
Finally what are opinals made out of? (Blade sorry)
Sharpened my mates and got it sharp really quickly.......D

Opinels are a very simple and plain carbon steel. 1075 if I remember correctly. The stainless version is probably similar to the blade steel used in SAKs. They call it "Inox" and as far as I know, there is no exact western equivelant. It's probably somewhere between 425mod and 440a. Regardless, considering what the buyer pays for an SAK or an Opinel both companies do an exquisite heat treatment. I know that Victorinox uses a computer controlled machine for its forged blades and tests each individual cutting edge with a laser.

I don't know if this helps because I sortof started to ramble but....

Thanks Adam it is usually me that rambles..... :lmao: good info I guess I should have bought one when in France recently snowboarding ...just couldnt decide which one (and I am a little paranoid about the illegality of them) My mate said he has to watch his as it rusts easily so I guess it it is carbon .....sharpened easily though :D

The eff Opinels are Inox, but so slim they are a doddle to sharpen. You are better with a slippy SAK for EDC though
