When transliterating into or out of runes it is important to remember that standardised spelling is a much later invention.
Not so sure I would agree with that. I belive it was not a problem until lots of people starting writing and then lots of new words appeared. A really bizarre thing to take on board is a lot of people who copied, could not read or write. Those amazing old bibles could well have been created by people who could not read them.
Btw. The term "Alphabet" should not really be applied to the runes as it is specific to letter systems which start with A "Alpha" and B "Beta" hence "Alphabeta" shortened to just alphabet in common usage.
Never heard that before makes sense though.
Ok, been to wiki. You are right about the origin of the Word, and how it should be used but modernly it is used for Runes because it is the fact that they are letters that matters not the order.
"A true alphabet contains separate letters (not diacritic marks) for both consonants and vowels."
The pronunciations have changed over the years as can be seen from words in our own language that are now pronounced in ways that bear no relation to the standard spellings frozen in time when laid down by Samuel Johnson's dictionary in 1755. Languages evolve quickly, spelling much more slowly.
Accents etc were a big problem. Apprently when the Normans were separted from France for a few years, they were not speaking the same languge any more. Which lead us to modern English.
More reading for you.
Was going to say I wonder how something like apple would have sounded, or any of these: -
bark - bǫrkr
knife - knifr
knot - knutr
Maybe we need a how to putting up.
I'm reading that they can spell words in English, others are saying you have translate it into Norse then into Rune.....AARGh HELP!!!![]()
Think it depends what you want to write, and how you want to right it. I tend to use them seprately for their symbol meaning.
If you want to know your name, might be worth asking Wayland nicely.
As far as stamps go you should only need a short and a long bar to make any of the runes in theory. I make any inscriptions on my silverwork with just two chisels.
You could make two bars, and some letter stencils. Might be a lot easier, but thinking about it are you not using a laser cutter?
