There is always discussion on the edibility of fruit by the roadside, but what of mushrooms and the like? Since they do not photosynthesise do they also not 'breathe'?

they consist of a network of microscopic filaments which absorb nutrients from the surrounding soil

if the soil is contaminated fungi have habit of concentrating any contaminant

lead sulphur and even radioactive pollution can all be found concentrated in fungi

avoid roads and verges for mushrooms ( even though it seems some of them thrive there )
