Very carefully constructed lifestyle with a lot of effort and little room for error.
Excellent photography. No -50C pictures. Barefoot = solid house.
The most that I ever did, with a partner, was 3 months, no people and no electricity.
Six hours on the river with 3 portages to get to the nearest road.
Given any choice, not again. Just too isolated after 6 weeks.

That sure looks like a good cabin. I wonder about the boy though. No friends? No one to share thoughts with like boys and girls do.
When I was younger I'd spend months paddling and exploring the rivers& lakes to the north of where ever my family were camped.
Also many winters season trapping/hunting on my own from small cabin or camp, maybe one week's travel on foot/dog team from other folk. Then I met my wife. And then Mrs T come hunting too and fine hunting & paddling partner she became.

I did wonder about socialisation. It is not normal for people to grow up isolated from their peers. His statement that he had a friend his age that he saw now and then but really they were strangers was odd.
I've met kids in the outback (Australia) who grew up on remote cattle stations, but stayed in contact with other kids via radio. They would meet up for a couple of weeks a year and stay in touch over the radio on a schedule. I guess these days they use the internet via satellite.
I read that they do have to go out for shopping and have a sat connection for solid communication.
I'll guess that the article makes their isolation a more exciting concept than actually happens.

Still, the long periods of isolation must shape their personalities.

Other than an emergency, I would never approach them for social contact.

As grand a life as it looks I do feel for the young lad. One contact a year, I think, is not good for him.
