Ray is due to hit our TV's next year but this time on ITV!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/2009/apr/02/survival-ray-mears-it

' The three new programmes, to be called Survival with Ray Mears, will feature the tracker using his wildlife knowledge and field craft skills to follow three predators - bears, leopards and the grey wolf. It will be his first series for ITV. '

Reckon it will be good - do you think he will take over when David retires?

I used to love Survival. Does this mean Ray has left the BBC? or can people be contracted to more than one tv channel? I was under the impression they couldnt.

The way I understand it is Ray isn't contracted to the BBC like a presenter or newsreader would be. He goes to them with ideas for series and they comission them or not as the case maybe be. So it looks like ITV approached him to do the new survival series and he agreed.

Sounds like it'll be a good series :)

I think it is more likely that Ray maybe has a contract with the BBC as a specialist in his given area so they could make use of his knowledge in certain areas for news or wildlife progs......but as often as not these days Ray could still work freelance with his own production co or as a partner or for any other company...... things are a lot more flexible than they used to be.

Which ever applies it's good to see more progs of this ilke and more of Ray too, informative and entertaining.....bring it on.

I wonder if the Bear tracking episode has come off the back of his recent Canada trip ?

Maybe he went to the BBC with the footage and they said no because of what Sir David has just been doing ?? Who knows ?

Good for Ray and good for us and the public in general. As the man matures he is moving into new areas which is a natural progression. We've all seen friction fire lighting, rigging a tarp, pine needle tea etc, that's had its day as far as television goes and it will be nice to see him use his knowledge and skills in a more general way while I'm sure more 'basic/bushcraft' camping styles and skills will be shown.

Ray has a great depth of knowledge about the natural world and I can think of no nicer person to carry on making television programmes along the line of the great Sir David Frederick Attenborough than Ray Mears. Go on my boy, get the camera's rolling :)

I'm really excited to see a tracking programe , I commend ITV for this, I think tracking is one area of bushcraft thats rarely covered in detail. Probably because its such a complex subject.
