Nice Chillpill, Mosquitos and Beaufighters are my favourite planes of the era. Very special aircraft with a definite menacingly graceful purpose about them.

Silly thing is I didn't find out until after she died. Knew all about the roles both my grandads played, but she never thought to mention the vital role she had in the war!! Amazing what you find out at funerals!

My wife didn't find out about her great uncle until after he'd died. Didn't even know she had a great uncle, let alone that he lived 10miles away.

Spitfire pilot Ronnie Hamlyn, the only RAF airman credited with destroying five enemy aircraft in a day.

There is a flying Mosquito at the moment, was built in NZ http://www.warbirdsnews.com/warbirds-news/worlds-flying-mosquito-flew-today.html would dearly love a ride in that.

I posted this further down the thread if you missed it. Brilliant plane Goatboy. I saw one years ago at an air show.:)

Sorry I think I did miss it on the first read, was too excited by the planes! Before the NZ rebuild the one you were talking about (I think) had a bit of a prang and was no longer airworthy. Remember reading into it when looking into getting flights in one for a friends 40th.

It's also always nice hearing about folks relatives and what they did during the war/past. Remember my Dad telling me that my Grandfather had only really talked to me of his experiences during WWII. Was in Africa helping Monty fight Rommel (who he actually looked quite like). My Father had been in the RAF in Malaysia/Singapore during the Communist upsurgance and had a few tales to tell also. It's a pity neither are still around to quiz further as I wish I'd taken more note.

In the woods if possible.

That's impressive. The only time I saw the engines get the least bit out of sync was when he throttled back for landing.

Years ago a friend of mine, Ron, invited me to navigate for him on a boat trip along the south coast of the UK.
The boat was called 'Filius', about fifty feet fibregalss hull, twin 500HP diesels, a converted coastguard vessel I believe.
When I got into the main cabin there was a photo of a Mosquito hanging near the companionway.
I asked Ron why it was there.
He said that Eric Bishop, the guy who had designed the Mosquito, had also designed the boat!

A great plane. I'm from North Lincolnshire near Binbrook and saw the Lancaster a few times - though easily confused with a Shackleton as a small boy! Had a great summer in 1990 ish when they were filming Memphis Belle there - not so great when a B17 crashed though!

We were up a duxford last week, dad was up in one of the tiger moths and had to wait to land as a mk1 spitfire was coming in :) later in the day when it left he flew a couple of circuits and buzzed the control tower :)

Red - you might to get to see 2 Lancs this year. The only other flying Lanc is coming over from Canada this year to do some airshows with the BBMF. That will be quite a sight!

I live on a main route for the BBMF, with a nice big cathedral nearby which they use as a way point, so we see various aircraft fairly regularly. Since I fully admit to being a complete airbuff, I know my kids are a bit less impressed than I am, but we did have the Lancaster go directly over the house at about 500ft not so long ago. That did impress them.

Canadian Lancaster dates below - courtesy of Lincolnshire Bomber Command Memorial (http://www.lincsbombercommandmemorial.com/)

Peoples Mosquito - UK rebuild project http://peoplesmosquito.wordpress.com/

August 28 - Visit to Durham Tees Valley Airport, formerly known as RAF Middleton St. George, where several RAF and RCAF squadrons were based during World War II, including Andrew Mynarski of 419 RCAF Squadron. September 6 & 7 - Air Waves Portrush, Northern Ireland (both Lancasters).

September 11 - Jersey International Air Display (both Lancasters).

September 22 - Depart back to Canada.

Additionally, the following dates are planned but not yet confirmed:

September 12 - Guernsey Air Display (both Lancasters).

September 13 & 14 - Goodwood Revival (both Lancasters).

September 13 & 14 - Duxford Air Show (both Lancasters)
