hi, people,
could any of you guys please help me with my A level product design project. i am making a product that is based around bushcraft (i really want to make a portable wood burning stove but i have to ask you guys what you think! :o ) but before i can decide what product to make i have to ask some poeple what they think about my ideas so far. our project has to be as real as we can make it to what they do in industry so we have to do market research (I know that if you metion market research people run a mile ). if you could answer these questions that would be really great!! :D

1.What of these products would best fill a gap in the market?
Sword display with lamp
Ultra light fold away camp bed
Hammock
Probable wood burning stove

2. Which one would you find most useful?
Sword display with lamp
Ultra light fold away camp bed
Hammock
Probable wood burning stove

3. Which one is your favourite idea?
Sword display with lamp
Ultra light fold away camp bed
Hammock
Probable wood burning stove

4. How much would you be prepared to spend on your chosen product?
Between £0- 5
£6- 10
£11-15
£16- 20
£21 -25
£26- 30
£31- 40
£40+

5. Do you have any hobbies? Please state:

thanks you can pm me with your answers or post them below.
:D :D :D :D :D :D
thanks PurpleHeath

In my opinion, I think you need to be more specific with your suggestion headings. I dont think any of the products would fill a hole in the marjet as they stand as any could be readily purchased, just fire them into google. If you where to re-define the titles to a specific consumer group (as wide as possible) for example:

blade display case, camping ultra compact(lightweight) wood burning stove or camping hammock then this would draw in the target consumer with their ideas in mind.

besides that I would go for the stove as well.

1.) Probable wood burning stove
2.) Probable wood burning stove
3.) Probable wood burning stove
4.) £40+ (quality counts)

1.) Probable wood burning stove
2.) Probable wood burning stove
3.) Probable wood burning stove
4.) up to £40 depending on features, weight etc.

Purpleheath,
For me also, its the probable stove (should that be portable?) all the way.
If you're after some design tips, I've been looking for, but can't find what I think I'm after. There are many around that are cylindrical (impractical to carry in a small back-pack) or slot/clip together (easier to carry in a pack, but there would be sooted/resin charred sides sliding around in your bag after your fire. My ideal would be for a smallish unit that has enough piano hinge to allow it to collapse in on itself and not only keep everything secure (ie not clanking about or rubbing on other pieces to cause noise) but would keep the sooty surfaces together and the cleaner surfaces to your kit - (though a decent linen bag might do the same, but again I've not seen one included)
As pretty extras, you could include sliding draught controls and fold out base/pot stands perhaps.

All the best with your project.

I suppose one could comment that you may have rigged the questions to get your desired answers. But my brain tends to seek further questions and issues to clarify and is slow to come to neat answers. So I hope it helps that I am asking more than I am answering.

1.What of these products would best fill a gap in the market

The market I assume is the "bushcraft market"? This would imply that the object could be taken into the woods for a camp or something like that.

What is a "Sword display with lamp"? A lamp can be very useful after dark in the woods. A good Woodcraft lamp would be interesting to see.

Is the camp bed all about back packing in comfort? If it can beat a high density sponge roll for comfort and convienience then we might all want one.

In bushcraft there are lots of fire designs to try out. What would be the purpose of a wood burning stove? The ultra environmentally friendly lobby would look for efficiency and minimisation of waste of heat. This would point towards "blue flame" technology and minimise the lovely effect of flickering yellow (but sooty and toxic) flames.

So, as you can see I am not clear what the gap in the market is. In a sense it may be the hammock if you produce a safe and useful off the peg product one could sleep in with confidence.

2. Which one would you find most useful?

Interesting question when a lot about bushcraft is doing without.

3. Which one is your favourite idea?

Further details of the initial ideas would help.

4. How much would you be prepared to spend on your chosen product?
Between £0- 5
£6- 10
£11-15
£16- 20
£21 -25
£26- 30
£31- 40
£40+

This is a common question in A-level projects. That depends hugely on the quality and the effectiveness of the product. An excellent product probably £40+.

5. Do you have any hobbies? Please state:

Apolagies again if I am not giving you the right answers. I wasn't much better when my daughter asked my questions about her project.

thanks everyone that has posted thats great!! :D
thanks for the advice, if i make the wood burning stove i would make a waterproof bag that it would fit in and that would double as a washing up bowl! i am sure i could put in some draught controls but that would unfortunately add to the weight! :o

rich59,
i am afraid to adimt that yes i did rig the questions for the desired answers because as soon as i started to do this project i knew what i wanted to do, therefore all my research has to reflect that. but all you have pointed out helps me so thanks!! :D ;)

Not to be lazy, but that pretty much sums it up for me too. I did buy one a while back that fell into this price range, but when i went to put a friend onto the folks that sold it to me, i found that they had disappeared.

Take a look at the thread on wood burning stove design:-

http://www.bushcraftuk.com/community/showthread.php?t=8049

3 interesting designs came up - a simple one and then two other clever ones but able to be built from simple materials - the "rocket stove" and the "reverse downdraft stove".

I don't know what the bushcraft market would want. The "reverse downdraft" appears to suggest that you could use it in doors with no special ventilation?

Defo a wood burning stove at around £25.
A while ago (4yrs) a work collegue was asked to test a small wood burner, it was about the size of a 16cm billy can, it retailed for about £40, it's main feature was a small battery opperated fan, lets just say it was the most evil little thing i had ever seen going (was emailed a video clip), white hot would be a understatment, superb for boiling water (same sort of boiling time to a msr on av gas) but not much else, scared the hell out off him using it, needless to say the company chose not to stock it, and needless to say i would have bought one had they been imported :D .
Look forward to some piccies on the site

That sounds like a thing that was called the turbo cooker.

If you could turn one of those out for £25 I would be interested :D

Do you know where i can get one? maybe a link would be interesting to all concerned ;)

So thats a tin can with a fan in the bottom? Must have to break the wood up small, and keep it from choking up with ash.

I'm not an engineer, but could you substitute a good chimney system for the fan?

Thats the sort of thing, the sierra stove looks pretty narrow though, very unstable in any sort of wind? I'd prefer something more squat, but like the idea of titanium :D , if your saving on weight by not having to carry fuel around may aswell go the hole hog , sod it i'd have the drill out try to shave a few more grams!!!!
