Plant based milk powder?

  • BushMoot: Come along to the amazing Summer Moot 31st July - 5th August (extended Moot : 27th July - 8th August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I've not tried it (nor any intention to, I like my milk to mammalian and preferably bovine rather than starchy plant or nut juice pretending!) but I'm told there is a very good powdered oat milk out there. Apparently you can make your own too by grinding oats very finely too

I can't drink milk, and I've always made my own from ground almonds. It's lovely stuff, so much nicer than the exhausted funny sweet stuff in the supermarkets.

An oats based product is here freely available, not bad actually. I have no idea if it is exported or not.

That’s a good idea. I’ve got used to unsweetened soya milk and find the dairy powder ones too sweet. I do often drink tea black but it’s nice to have options when away for a while without a fridge and want cereal.

Lots more options plant based options since that thread was started. Soya has turned into a nut, from a bean! ;)

Do you have porage oats to hand ? Rolled oats, I mean, or even muesli ?

If you do, sieve some and take that fine oat dust to use to make your 'milk'.

Simply put a couple of pudding spoonsful of the flour into a big mug, pour on some lukewarm water and stir well. Set it aside for ten minutes or so, strain it (sieve again, line it with a paper kitchen towel ) and that's the original "Oat Milk". Totally unadulterated with sugars, weird preservatives, odd whatevers, just oats and water.

If you let it sit, it'll seperate, just give it a stir before you use it and it'll be milky again.

It's quite nutritious, used to be used to put a little weight on children who weren't thriving, or invalids in need of a boost.
Tasty and easy to drink. You can add honey or if preferred savoury, a wee bit of salt.
I like it just as it comes.

You can buy oat flour easily again these days, it's popular for baking, if you don't want to be bothered sieving it from the rolled oats.

I have used powdered soy, coconut….and goat when that wasn’t giving me trouble. The soy was the worst of the three, just watery with particles floating around in it.

I use such things only on cereal, only when travelling. I dilute my liquid, carton based not-milk at home with 30-50% water anyway. I drink my tea black now.

I’d rather have black tea and coffee than have it taste a bit odd!
I started out by cutting milk out of my camping menu. I now no longer use milk at all.

My frequent coffee is black as is my cocoa (absolutely not drinking chocolate). I also make my daily porridge without milk. I rarely drink tea but do occasionally enjoy spiced tea, obviously without milk.

The only problem that I have in camp is offering a coffee to those who need milk when I don’t have any.

Camping ?
Ground almonds. Add them to a mug with water. Give it a stir, let it sit for a few minutes. Pour off as much 'milk' as you need, and just eat the rest, especially if it's with breakfast cereal.
