Would love to do some hiking in Sweden this year and want to go this summer!

can anyone reccomend a varied route or trail (with a good bit of woodland) that i can do in about 5days or less with a mate and preferably with cabins enroute for overnight comfort?

will only be able to do 5 days as will strugle getting anymore time off!

if i were to head off in september any hints and tips for the trip would be hugely appreciated!

I have done alot of outdoorsy stuff in wales and scotland before and have always wanted to head to sweden!

many thanks

No mozzies in September, not unless you are in the very south.

It all depends on what you want. For fairly suburban (by Swedish standards) there is hiking trails near Stockholm that are ok (no cabins, but open sided shelters), and there are others in many other parts of Sweden as well (e.g. Glaskogen near Årjäng -- Prebens homebase -- is quite nice and a bit wilder and very nice taiga woods). There are cabin based routes up in the mountains (http://svenskaturistforeningen.se lists them).

If you go up int the mountains remember that September is right at the edge of the snow-free season, so pack accordningly or take your chances.

And one more thing; in September you may be better off keeping track of the moose hunting season. Up north (e.g. Jämtland) it opens the first week of September (first week of October in the south). The hunters may not be able to keep you out, but won't really appreciate having you bumble through in front of their hunting blind just as a moose almost got out into the open. Out in the contryside moose hunting is a religion for a significant sub-population.

get the cheapest flight you can find. take a hike along a trail. skip cabins, use the open sided shelters. don't overcomplicate stuff.

The Rainy Side of the Lakes.
I wouldn't bother if I was you, I've recently returned from a hellish five months there.

Hardly anyone speaks the Queen's lingo, the natives are surly and dislike foreigners, farmers will shoot you for walking through their trackless and impenetrable woods, and the women are ugly beyond endurance.

Don't believe a word of it, Michael.

Cheers for the responses chaps.

open shelters a plenty i hear so will try that option!

thanks for the SEARCH tip offs. excuse my ignorance on the use of the tool, having not been into the forum seen too long i guess i'm out of touch.

i am getting quite bewildered as to where to fly to etc but if stockholm based routes aren't too bad i'll give it a go!

cheers again to all who have helped me out sooo far.

Countryside around Stockholm is quite flat, you should go a little further North if you want mountains.

Clearly!...

oh yea the women are obviously hideous!! i'd be lying if i said that didnt add to the lure of going!lol

north you say?! sounds like a plan to me! would like some hilly horizons! the most important bit for me is the woods, as long as i see some woods i am well chuffed! seeing as over half the landscape there is reputed to be covered in the stuff i should be ok!

Unless you are experienced I would suggest not going into the mountains later than the first part of the September. Weather can be a bit unpredictable later than that. Down in the forest you should be ok with no special gear or experience much later in season.
