I believe that on a well populated island like ours they could cause havoc with their dams. Blocking streams/rivers and disrupting water supplies for agriculture/livestock. It would be good to see them back though. They would create more bio-diversity in the regions they were introduced which can only be a good thing.

Much of the current flooding problems we are seeing are down to a mix of the increasing intensity of weather events and the poor state of our watersheds.
There is increasing realisation that restoring river meanders, pools, floodplain woodlands etc will de-synchronise watercourses and decrease the flashiness of catchments.
Beavers are part of this sort of restoration. Far from causing havoc, beavers could help reduce it!

Wow - you can take our Canadian beaver over here. We have over population with some of them here in Ontario - its amazing how beavers can shape landscape. Its the animal on our 5 cent coin!
