Just My thoughts on the matter. Having lived all my life in the country, I very much appreciate that the shoots are an essential income for land owners. They need a way to make agriculture pay, as the average Dairy farmer barely makes enough to feed the Beast let alone their Family. I find that strayed Game is fair. lets face it, it's a situation of 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. Just as your birds will wander off, the next shoot looses some to you, it's a cycle really. The numbers of pheasant killed on the road is mainly down to the fact that they are fed from the back of a Hi-Lux, in a pheasants head Diesel Engine = Dinner. I've seen it that pheasant will run up to my Pick-Up, that is normal behaviour for them to do. I'm not the type to just ring their necks when I get out, as I happen to have no want to take them. On the subject of a class war, I find that the Gentry are not the issue, it's the jumped up wee numpties that cannae shoot straight. Too often their are people who pose, and when I mean pose I mean don their Breeks and pretend to be the 8th Barron of somewhere (OK a tad hyperbolic), the actual Gentry tend to be down to earth and have more a kinship with the keepers and beaters than the people paying the money. I'm not saying that all of the Guns are like that but We can't deny some are. On the note of Boar, there looks to be a breeding population in Galloway, I personally quite like them being back in the UK. Boar are both TASTY and useful, I would make a wee bet that the woodland quality will improve wherever the boar go (natural instincts and all). I can't see why a Government run reintroduction program could not be set up. But as for a proper answer to the initial question. You can take Pheasant, Grouse, Capercaillie and Blackcock as long as it is on your land and in season but beware if it falls beyond the boundry its poaching if you retrieve, unless you were to use a secretly trained Cat as they are a roaming creature to retrieve said bird.
