Paracord winders Atwood Ready Rope verses Boonies Spool Tool.

Comparison of two models of paracord management tools.

Orange one on the left is the Boonies Spool Tool. I’ve seen it marketed under the Colcolo brand name too.
Black one is Atwood Rope Manufacturing Ready Rope.

Both of these cord winders include:

• a tie off hole to hold the end of the cord
• a shrouded cutter (blade can be replaced)
• slot to grip the loose end of the cord
• space to hold a lighter
• a hanging point

The Spool tool. Maybe 3D printed but I have no quality issues on mine. There are multiple slots to lock off different cord thickness so it should work for bank line too. This spool has about 15m of fire cord on it.

The blade is held in but screw on plate and there are marked graduations along the edge.

There is a curbed tray to hold a mini bic lighter. I think it is supposed to clip in but my lighters don’t quite so a bit of strictly tape secures it.

My spool included a tiny carabiner.

Overall seems robust enough to survive knocking about in a backpack.

Atwood Rope Manufacturing Ready Rope.

This is probably injection moulded and there are seam lines and burrs on mine.

The blade is held in by a clip down plate, this still needs a tool to open up.

The lighter compartment is inside the core of the tool and fits a full size bic lighter. I added tape each end to stop the slight rattle. The end cap is seperate but has tiny lanyard holes and clips on fairly snuggly.

The tie off point is larger loop than the spool tool.

Of the two I like the Ready Rope more because of the bigger internal storage.

Price wise the Spool Tool is about £8 and there are a couple of colours. The Ready rope is £12 but I got mine with 30’ of cord for £18.

I tend to store my ready to use cord as a donut.
I find that rope stored as a donut comes out twisted when you pull it. With a figure of 8 tied in the middle it comes out straight with no twists (essential when you're unwinding hundreds of feet of polyrope for an electric fence but maybe not so important for bushcraft).

Not had it be an issue for para cord.
Bankline a bit more so. ;)

I use the donut for bushcraft as it snags less when in a pocket.

Ridge line for my tarp is usually pre-made so that is a hank with the toggle looped through it. Probably could just stuff it into a small bag and run it out like a throwline, but then slightly more involved to put away/dry.

I find winders a bit better for paying out with wet and cold hands. I feel it in the joints now so help is good! :)
