I keep hearing references to a "501" pack and it makes me wonder if that refers to a size of pack, or just a model number.

I did some calculations on my pack sizes, converting them to metric, and found it was no help. My smallest pack is 65560 cubic centimeters and my largest pack is 163900 cubic centimeters.

Just thinking aloud here...was it 501 or was it 50 l (L for litres?) guess it would depend on whether you saw it written down, or heard it spoken..

Could be. I'll bet you are right. I misread g4ghb's post above too. Will have to find the thread(s) that mention it.

I did the conversion on one of those websites from cubic inches to liters and my smallest pack, a #2 pack comes out at about 65 liters.
#3 pack comes out at about 87 liters
#4 pack comes out at about 126 liters

and my largest pack (for carrying large awkward items) comes out at about 164 liters - which is big enough to pack a person. These are all Duluth packs, and anything over the #3, would be for canoeing more than for hiking.

I have a 65 liter pack, but it gets used for storing odds and ends of gear and camo clothing that I don't wear anymore.

My main use packs are a 10 liter ruck and a 28 liter ruck.

:lmao: Guess I need to move to California!

Seriously, the larger packs are for long canoe trips, winter treks, and moving equipment into the woods for such things as making sugar harvesting wild rice and netting whitefish.

My main climbing pack is (I think) 80 litre. It's a Serratus, made of red cordura nylon. Frameless, of course.

My older pack is a smaller 40 or 50 litre Arcteryx. Has really poor shoulder straps on it, barely enough padding.

My campus book bag is MEC (obviously!) and probably 25 litres or less.

And, I have a belay bag which is just one large zippered compartment for storing rope and harnesses. Oh, and it has a sortof...kidney shaped pocket on the outside, it's really only large enough for one water bottle. It has much better shoulder straps than my campus book bag.

Mind you, I don't get out much anymore because of work and university. And these days, I have a much larger interest into bushcraft and survival. But I posted that in another thread already!

Cheers,

Adam

Hi,

My main pack is a Lowe Alpine Muon 35. It has a customised internal "frame". It will hold about 40 litres as it has large side pockets. Great for trips where there is plenty to forage.

My big pack is a Lowe Alpine Frontier 65+15. Haven't needed to tweek this yet :naughty: For stuff in the middle of nowhere.

I'm trying to work up a "solution" that just uses a 6 litre bum bag that has large compression straps on the outside for extra bits... the more you know the less you carry sort of thing.

cheers
