Aha! I found it ;) Thanks a lot! One question about the baskets; Are they only intended for use in good weather? I can imagine they would have to cover up the content in some way when is was raining. What did you do?

When trekking and camping we put everything in dry bags and rubble sacks, just as I still do with a canvas pack, but the panniers we used were tighter woven than the old ones needed to be and were given a good coat of linseed oil a couple of times a year. When I was a child in Ireland people used to line them with oiled canvas and use an oiled canvas flap outside as a lid. They're much more weatherproof than you'd think. :)

Nice to know, because that was my only concern:) I better start building the frame before Christmas then!

I'll be watching out eagerly for developments, so be sure to keep us updated! I love this sort of thing, I hope you have a lot of fun with it; tramping around the trails with horses and ponies has been one of the high points of my life but not very easy or pleasant in the British Isles any more. Best of luck with it :)

You will probably have a good laugh when you see the result!
I really look forward to bring the pony with me on trips. The dog is to old to join me know, so I miss a good hiking companion. Maybe I should put the dog in one of the bags? What a sight that would be!

We carried two of the older dogs in between the panniers, leaning forward on the horse's withers - they both loved it! But a third Springer, who was also great friends with all the horses, just wouldn't do it and we were never able to understand why

Ive seen human rucksacks used on ponies...But I suspect they were the cheap, not optimal option.

There is a place near here does Llama trekking...I wonder what they use?

You could make a pack saddle like the moke is wearing...not hard, surely?

Just a thought but have you thought about purloining Hamish (Dreadhead) to make you paniers for your cuddy next time he's over in Norway? Brilliant leatherworker who visits Norway fairly often these days. Even built a harness paniers for his doggy iirc.
