Its why we all do it right? I go out in the wilds to zone out from social conditioning and all the bull of the media and everyday drudge , hence the idea of going to a camp site horrifies me!

It's about getting away from certain elements of society and getting closer to the real world.

If I had to define the reason in a few words I would probably say it is because it makes me contented.

On deeper levels I'm sure it has/had/will have many meanings to each of us and as a group the list must be nearly endless and always evolving.

I also don't see the appeal in going to a campsite but if it allows someone else to have that same sense of contentment that I get when I'm out in the middle of nowhere then it must be a good thing.

I dont do it because I want to get away from society as there are quite a lot of things I like about society, I spend time out doors for the simple reason I enjoy it

For me its a calmer way of life, a life i would prefer all the time ,but sadly for me and many life is ruled by time, so busy a lot,i look forward to getting away from day to day life and breath in the air, as ferris bueler said , life moves pretty fast,if you dont stop and look around once in a while your miss it,;)

Putting up with all the BS that's underlying most aspects of our society is very soul weary.
When i'm sitting round a fire cooking, whittling or just relaxing I get a deep feeling of satisfaction.
It's simple, uncomplicated and good.
The way life should be...

For me it's definitely getting away from society. I work in an office in Leeds in a really pressured position, I sit in car averaging 11mph either side of sitting at that desk. So for me there is absolutely nothing better than getting out and about at any opportunity and stay as far away from money and the rat race.

it's for those moments by the fire, on on a mountain top or looking up through a woodland canopy when you think "you know, everything is alright" Some campsites are alright so long as you can be left alone :D

Having grown up on a farm and lived "rurally" for most of my life, getting outdoors is just a normal thing to do. All the rest is abnormal. ;)

I grew up on a smallholding of sorts; horses, cattle, sheep,(my Dad is a butcher), but then spent many years living in cities, or else the only time I was outdoors i was wearing a lot of green. I grew up in the countryside, but for me to really feel away from it all I had to be either in the mountains or in the woods - and preferably alone. For me, a campfire was the key and heart of really getting away - setting up and cooking in the dark just reminded me of the army. So for me, the essence of getting away from it all is sitting staring into the fire just as it gets dark, listening to the wind in the trees. Pretty cliched I guess, but there you go :dunno:

"You were an apple pie clone living at home
Never straying to far from your phone
Now son make it through enemy lines
You must hurry there's not much time
Made it sir. They're gonna drop the bomb
No time to evacuate, they'll call our moms

F*** the system, they can't have me,
I don't need society"

For me, being out in nature is what it means to be human.

Getting away from the "norm" of life.

I like to canoe and wildcamp, cycle and wildcamp, just widcamp, tree dwelling wild camps to name a few. Most I do alone, some with my children, but I also like to use campsites to enjoy the company of good friends who enjoy camping this way.

Variety is the spice of life.

Dorset for good...!!
To me, its getting away from the "trappings" of society - traffic, mob phones, BB and suchlike on TV etc.. etc..
But also the peace and quiet, closeness to nature and perhaps (and this might sound a bit "twee"....)
but about getting closer to yourSELF.....

Fine sentiment Alba; for someone who lives in a country with the right of responsible access on it's statute books.
The rest of the UK ain't so lucky.

Campsites have pros as well as cons.

Pros are;
Definitely access where there otherwise is none.
Open fires where otherwise there is no scope for them.
Safe drinking water and sewage disposal.
Group meet ups become possible, and with good like minded company, that's a holiday in itself :)
They are sustainable; the site is cared for and not abused, and it limits damage by multi users on pristine woodlands.

Cons;
It costs money though that is more often than not a very reasonable sum.
Solitude isn't guaranteed.
Can be limited in the natural resources one is permitted to use.

Can't think of any others tbh :dunno:

Horses for courses I reckon; go where it suits you best.

cheers,
Toddy

[h=2]Question - Outdoors, is it all about Getting away from society?[/h]
My answer - Yes.

like most others here have stated the feeling of re-connecting with the environment, leaving modern life behind, and being at peace with the world and myself is a huge part of setting of on another adventure, but i also enjoy the historical aspect of walking on Dartmoor - i often route my walks to take in pre-historic remains or the left-overs from the industrial revolution, and love that a single walk can bring me closer to many thousands of years of history.
