A horse bow! of course, I never knew that!:)

this may be a silly question but could I make a full size bow small enough to fit in a rucksack i.e. good enough to shoot small game like rabbit/pigeon/squirrel?
perhaps made with a stiffer wood?, just thinking it would be nice to have like a much small "stalking" bow that you could use in different positions like sitting laying down etc.
(and no i don't want a Crossbow !!) but perhaps that sort of size bow.
(you may realise i know nothing about bows:eek: (just the using of them).

well still stuck at home Dr's orders, well I've been doing the odd bit of Kit fixing etc, and I eventually sewed those canvas groundsheets together along the seems. which was quite easy.
so now i have approx 12ft by 6ft canvas tarp, But i had as play in the garden and with one pole you can make half a pyramid design which would easily house four!

I'll fix some goal-post type poles (like old scout tents)when i use it for my demo's though as it's quite heavy.

I'd hate to be "house-bound" forever I'd go nuts!:yelrotflm :red: :burnout:

you could try and make a slingshot you can fit that in a pocket

I'm thinking of buying one at hoopers

Sorry Rich but bow hunting is illegal in this country. In theory the little horsebow in the vid would be a fine small game bow. It's short (48" I think) and pulls around 35lbs, plenty powerful for small game and should shoot a light arrow fast enough. You would need a more powerful bow and a heavier arrow to take deer sized game. 50lb @28" is usually considered the minimum draw weight for deer sized game amongst primitive hunters over in the US. Generally speaking, the denser the wood, the heavier draw weight you can get from it but there are other factors such as tension and compression strength to take into consideration. The thing to remember with a small bow is you are asking less wood to do more work, and with a shorter draw the arrow has less chance to store energy. The plains style was a very specialist weapon designed to shoot at close range but the indians did manage to take buffalo with them!
The other option is a take down like the one I'm working on. You could easily make one that would break down into two 30" sections that would yield a sweet shooting bow.
While you are stuck at home you might want to check out Paleoplanet, they have some great archery forums there, with some of the most knowledgeable bowyers in the world posting.

Kai, I'm a big trail bread fan!
Some of my favourites are adding chopped apple and sultanas to the mix. Also mixing it with beer instead of water adds a nice yeasty taste.
My current fav is rolling my dough out into a rectangle, sprinkling with cinnamon, brown sugar and sultanas, then rolling up into a swiss roll. I then cut into slices, flatten and fry in butter (at home I brown them on each side and pop in the oven for ten minutes to finish off but you can do them just in the frying pan over the camp fire or dutch oven them).

:rolleyes:
I knew about bow hunting law ;) i used to teach archery to kids in the late 80's,
I've just law shoved in my face in a big way:rolleyes:
("bushcraft chatter", "a really small archery bow that works").

Nothing against you mate, you weren't to know,:D
I saw your work you inspired me! and i thought I'd give it a go, (but....I'm a bit lazy!:eek: :lmao: ) so wondered if a smaller less complex bow would work (If i ever needed it to).
I think they reckon that I might be a Poacher!:lmao:

I might try a small bow, when i can find some decent wood. :)

It was just your wording of the original post, you probably should have said to "theoretically" hunt small game:) . I chucked some more ideas up on the bushcraft chatter thread as well.

I started a bow at the bushmoot years ago in ash. A guy with an identical cut to mine split his when he was tillering (????) it. Consequently I think the same will happen to my bow. Should I try to finish it??:eek: :rolleyes:

It doesn't follow that yours will break. It could be that he created a hinge, where the bow was bending too much in one area or he violated the back causing a splinter to lift up. There are too many variables to give you any advice over the internet. I say go for it, the worst you'll gain is experience and some kindling!;)

Hello again Gents...and any Lady lurkers!
Have not been keeping up with the thread recently - looks like its become quite active again. I've been busy preping for a Wainrights Coast To Coast trip in May. Just finished sewing up a Pertex bivy bag to use with my single skin Hex3 tent on the trip. Got 3m of Pertex4 from PointNorth in Wales for £15. One nights marking and measuring and an afternoons sewing gave me a Showerproof/breathable bivy at 180g in weight - much lighter than anything I can buy!

Took one of my daughters for some early morning deer spotting a couple of weeks ago. Only caught a fleeting glimpse of the big herds of Roe we were looking for but spooked a few Muntjacs deep in the woods and were visited by a huge dog fox while having a brew!

Also been out doing some lengthy day walks in prep for May. Here's a pic from a 22 mile Coastal walk last month.

See ya'll soon hopefully...

That is quite some view on that last picture (you can see the curviture of the earth)

Hey Rich got a doodle for what is the only way i can come up with for your mini bow and arrow

Key: Red = Rubber etc
Blue = String/ cord etc
Black = Metal etc
Grey = Hinged metal etc

Its a very rough sketch / doodle
makeshiftbow.jpg

Very basic and simple was the only idea that came to mind do with it what you like

Looks like i've got a busy ish next week I am upping the time i spend outdoors on monday and tuesday (meeting some mates for a bit of backpacking on tuesday)

Yep we're all still learning and will continue to do so until we start composting!. I do find that Backpacking and Bushcraft are quite complimentry interests though. The Bushcraft helps with a better appreciation and increased awareness of the landscape that is being crossed whilst backpacking. Whilst a lightweight Backpacking approach to Bushcraft can help us reduce the amount of 'Gear' we 'think' we need to carry when out doing a bit of Bushcrafting!
