I'm off to climb Black coombe and white coombe in the lakes next sat. The inlaws have paid for the family to go up. So I am trying to pack light and practical stuff for walking/bushcraft stuff

I'll wait to get a few more opinions before we settle on a date (or perhaps 2?)

as for sites, I've tried and I'm still waiting to hear from the Thetford scout site (I'm going to give up i think):(

Hethel is always an option, but Mozzies/horseflies will be a problem.

other scout sites will be busy and unwilling to take on "Unknown blokes".

another option which is not ideal would be to do "quiet" camping, which has it's own associated problems.

any ideas?

The site at Hethel has it's mozzie problems no worse that at two Mile bottom in Thetford, the one good thing there it really quiet and a couple of out of the way places off the main track and not see a soul all weekend.

As long as the fires are kept sensible, no issues there and there is a nice supply of wood, I find the place a little gem, just let John know in advance.

Rich, one part can be shut off to the public and is ideal and not like the side we usually go with the mozzies as the land is fairly dry.

I guess to be fair most places will have mozzies anyway.

so shall we go for it then?

Hethel? It's relatively easy to find.
no rules as such set in place (apart from respecting the owners land/ animals/country code etc)

there are no facilities! so we'd have to make our own:eek: ,
no water on tap so bring loads even10 litres! (though I'm sure we could "borrow" some if needed)
but apart from that anything goes, tarps hammocks, tents, whatever.

there is enough debris that we could make a suitable "fireplace".

It's probably worth when we get there clearing a "safe path" to use at night, you'll see why!;)

That sounds awesome so is this for June Fri19 Sat20 Sun21

I have a couple new bits of kit thats a lot of water i guess it will have to be bottled i dont want to carry a lot of kit but looks like a 45 litre rucksack should be mor than enough

I had a lovely stroll around Bacton Wood today. Spent an hour watching two stags browsing 20 yards from me. Ate wood sorrel and pignuts (one the size of a conker!). I cut a chunk of dead cherry for spoons and knife handles and salvaged some birch bark to have a go at making small containers. Got to test out my latest knife. It worked very well. I was there for 5 hours and only saw one other person:) .

Insect repellent! :(

lol well a dose of fire may help and a mozzie netoh yeah got a new bag and some toys.

im looking forward to the off a chance to actually properly feild and test my gear.

Cool kit yet again!!
Is that knife a K-bar?

I like the DPM rucksack loads of areas to strap Molle type gear on!

You're right of course a fire will sort out some of the mozzies.

As for Kit I'm taking?

all the stuff i normally have (i.e. brew kit, Basha, etc)

2-3 season sleeping bag.
but I'll be bringing probably my hammock/stretcher
Roll mat.
Bivibag/tarp
food (enough for the weekend)
wash kit
Loads of water etc
Parachute

other stuff not normally carried or allowed:
Mod Survival Knife.
shovel (for the WC)

:D

Yeah its the knife the us pilotes was issued in nam but its blunt and need to sharpen it but hey well there a couple things I would need to get before the off but they are small things for organisation. Gonna pop into hoopers tomorrow and get a shuffle with its pouch I'm looking for the hole combat vest thing now or a yoke system whichever is cheaper or whichever I can afford
