Here's a tip that was given to me and it works!
If, like me, your boots sometimes rub the back of your heel (I have a bony right heel - ALL boots rub me - it's nothing to do with buying boots that fit well so much as an ill-fitting heel), then instead of wearing just one thick pair of socks, wear two thin pairs instead.
The dual layer not only keeps your feet warm, but it means that what rubs together is the material of the socks rather than the back of your heel.
This is the kind of thing that I bet everyone else already knew, except me.
