No cook main meal one packet options

  • BushMoot: Come along to the amazing Summer Moot 31st July - 5th August (extended Moot : 27th July - 8th August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Packets of cooked ready to eat grains of various types and flavours, such as Jamie Olivers, Merchant Gourmet, own brands etc, are a very sustaining and flavoursome standby, coupled with some tinned sardines or mackerel, no prep required, healthy and tasty :)

Babybel cheese keeps ages in their wax coatings, oatcakes and peanut butter sachets very satisfying too.

Nature Valley have a newish range of oat biscuit bars sandwiched with peanut butter, and a couple of other variations, which are an easy and pleasant energy boost too.

Just ideas from what I've figured out for myself when camping or out working in the woods when you might not have or want to heat or cook something up, I always have a no cook alternative with me.

I might have to try them, I'd like to have something I'd like to eat as well so nothing goes to waste. I get the Nature Valley cereal bars when on offer and that's what I gave away.

I did notice the rice pots but I'm not sure I'd eat them so they'd end up being thrown out at expiry.

Resurrecting this thread, we've occasionally used the merchant gourmet rice pouches and have found some of their more recent offerings very useful. Their jumbo chickpeas for example are great, they can be eaten straight from the pouch and as they are not in a tin and don't have any liquid in them ideal to take with you when out and about.

Worth trying some of their other products, we found some of the curries good such as

I tried them for the first time just this week. Their wholegrain brown, red and wild rice was very nice.

Chorizo, saucisson, landjager, pepperoni ... dried fatty sausage kind of things. Jerky, biltong also.

Parmesan. Custard creams :)

Lidl do a Smokey chilli non carne pouch. Sold as a protein thing but it’s just beans so probably high in protein anyway. Worked well with their pouch of wild rice and grains.
The Merchant gourmet range is better and will now try out the lentil curry one.

Peanut butter and jam go ok on oat cakes. I also bought some olive spread that works well with them. Bit salty but a small pot goes a long way. I use a small glass jar (tiny jam jar) now to carry because the oil seems to weep of plastic pots.

Lidl do both their own brand and Merchant Gourmet ready cooked veggie mixes. As the othe have said, are pretty complete and nice. They average about 375Kj pouch and don't break the bank. Some are a bit drier than others but are a regular meal for me in the van or out and about.

Personally I didn't like the lidl pouches as I didn't like the basil taste. Nothing wrong with them but might be worth trying one or two of these things before stocking up.

Today I noticed Tesco had various Merchant Gourmet pouches discounted and some reduced to clear - picked up several pouches of cooked beans for 54p each and they can be eaten straight from the pouch. (Offers seem to be store dependant).
