Hi Tom, There was a very nice frame made out of Rhodadendrum for a 4 poster bed by one of the staff at Chatsworth House (in the Peak District). So you might like to consider something similar? Once you take the bark off with a drawknife you could end up with some lovely curves for an archway too. As a novice Bodger I like to do some coppicing and spoon making and as I'm not too far away I'd be happy to help for a couple of hours on a weekend for a decent cuppa and some wood.
I'm a self employed gardener so unfortunately can only help during the winter.
