Get some plastic drinks bottles (large size) along with various natural substances ie charcoal, sand, moss, pebbles and get them to construct a workable water filter. Easily made in a few minutes, then make up some mucky water with twigs and leaves etc floating in it then see who's is most effective at filtering it.

Give them a car with a tyre removed - spare and jack available - no nuts. ask them to make the car driveable (take one nut off from each of the other wheels)

And to save effort, ask them to remove the tires first themselves. kid can have them all off and the car on bricks in under 14 seconds.
