wow! I watched a programe on lake victoria which has a similar midge problem. apparently it was caused by over fishing certain species which used to eat the midge lava and now they have to suffer the consiquences. Though the residents of the apt named "spider island" , which swarms with spiders that feed on the glut of midges, well those people catch clouds of the little blighters and make them into patties!
